Abel Xavier: The New Face of the LA Galaxy?
By: Bob | May 14th, 2007
This one fits into the what the f*ck? category. According to reports, former Middlesbrough defender Abel Xavier has signed an 18-month contract to play with the Los Angeles Galaxy. Come summertime he will be David Beckham’s new best friend forever and he will keep many a beauty salon in LA in business.
Xavier is a 34-year-old Portuguese defender with 20 international caps to his name. His resume includes stops at Estrela Amadora, Benfica, Bari, Real Oviedo, PSV, Everton, Liverpool, Galatasaray, Hannover 96, Roma and Middlesbrough. In other words, he has played everywhere and he has managed to do so despite having to sit out a year after testing positive for steroids following a UEFA Cup match in 2005.
A 34-year-old doper who has never lived up to his potential and who has bounced around like a ping pong ball. Sounds like just the player that MLS needs to be paying big money to, right?
If it doesn’t work out at least he should be able to find another job in LA as a scary looking Hollywood villain.

Perplexing signing to say the least. He did play in EPL this season so he might help the Gals some but the big question is how much they are going to pay him.

This strikes me as a bit of a panic move by LA. Let’s see what AEG have planned next for the Fire – Freddy Rincon maybe?

So LA have, what, six or seven DP slots? Nice.

As a boro fan I can tell you that Abel is a very good defender. He should do a good job.

Xavier was a good defender, who probably is getting a bit old now. However im sure he would have enough ability to cope in the MLS
He did though in 2000 serve a ban for assaulting a Referee at the European Championships with Portugal.
