Adding Insult to Injury

By: Martha | December 8th, 2007

Doh!You may recall the news from earlier this week that Ivica Osim, one of football’s most magnificent characters, is recovering with near-miraculous speed from a stroke he suffered a few weeks ago. Despite his swift recovery, however, Osim — who is in his upper 60s and has serious heart problems — was relieved of his duties as the coach of the Japanese national team last Wednesday, and replaced by Takeshi Okada.

And, now, it appears, firings run the family: The merciless people at J-League side JEF United Chiba have sacked Osim’s son Amar.

The younger Osim had been his father’s assistant at JEF United Chiba, and the club appointed him to succeed Pops last year when the old man took charge of Japan. Things, however, didn’t go well, and Amar’s got no medical problems to use as an excuse. While he did survive the season on the bench, his team finish the just-completed campaign in 13th place, and clearly have higher aspirations, so they sacked him virtually the moment the last match was played.

I suppose now, at least, dad will have someone to bitch at about how crap Japan are without him.
