Advice for That Player Who Bit the Referee
By: Laurie | June 24th, 2008
News coming out of Delaware is that a player last week took a bite out of a referee.
Yes, a bite. Drew blood and everything. (Photo comes from seconds before the incident. Disturbing, no?)
What does this mean? I believe it means that it’s time to revisit my previous advice, first offered up for Toronto FC player Danny Dichio last year when he got suspended for leaving tooth-marks in Chicago player Diego Gutierrez:
I think I speak for all fans everywhere when I say that yes, each of us has probably had a player or two we wouldn’t have minded taking a little nibble on at some point. But the rest of us kept two words in mind. Words that we took seriously. Words that meant something to us. Words that made us remember that we were answering to a power higher than our spur-of-the-moment, selfish desires. And those words were:Self. Control.
Or maybe they were Restraining. Order. Whatever. My point is? We did not act on our impulses.
Remember these words, boys and girls, when, in the heat of the moment, you are hit with the urge to chomp. You will thank me later.
(Hat tip Orlando Sentinel. Click on the link for the video of the rather disturbing news segment, where the player’s mom justifies his actions.)
