Ahmed Hassan Makes Dream Al-Ahly Debut

By: Daryl | July 21st, 2008

This is the goal that won the massive Cairo derby yesterday. Al-Ahly vs Zamalek is always always massive in Egypt, but yesterday the old foes faced off in the first game of the CAF Champions League group stages.

Al-Ahly – technically the homes team, though the teams share Cairo Stadium – took the lead through little Angolan Flavio, then Zamalek pulled back with a goal from Gamal Hamza. But man of the moment was Egypt captain Ahmed Hassan. This was his Al-Ahly debut, having just completed a move home to Egypt from Anderlecht, and in the 67th minute he smashed home this free kick to give Al-Ahly a 2-1 win.

The two meet again on September 14th in the penultimate CAF Champions League Group A game. If either team has yet to qualify for the knockouts, then expect a belter of a game.

We currently have an excellent Zamalek blog, but we’re still looking for an Al-Ahly writer. Anyone interested in writing about Al-Ahly please email daryl[at]theoffside.com for more details.

  • Saw the game on Sopcast, pretty entertaining. Doesn't hold a candle to their last encounter in the Cup Final though. That was one of the craziest derbies I've seen in a long time. Ahly keeps winning though... I was pulling for Zamalek yesterday just so they could break this losing streak to their rivals. Maybe next time...
