Alex can’t beat Airport Security Defense
By: Bob | July 31st, 2007
First they made us take off our shoes. Then they took away our lighters and breast milk. And now airport security is getting in the way of football transfers. After getting the security run around at Heathrow airport in London, Chelsea target Alex decided he’d rather take his bags and fly back to Brazil then deal with the always pleasant airport officials.
Chelsea’s proposed transfer of Alex was thrown into chaos after the defender became so fed up with being questioned by immigration officials that he got on a plane back to his native Brazil. The defender spent about four hours being questioned at Heathrow on Sunday after he told officials that he had arrived to join Chelsea.
If only the immigration folks had been this persistent with Andriy Shevchenko! He might not have had to endure a season like the one he had last year.
As for Alex, Chelsea think they will still be able to import him into the country legally, which would be nifty for them since as he showed at PSV Eindhoven he is a heck of a player. The one hitch may be that he hasn’t played in enough games for Brazil over the past two years to qualify for a work permit but apparently that doesn’t matter because competition for places in the Brazil side is “intense,” which I guess is code for saying that the top fifty players in Brazil are more than qualified to play in England.
