All the kids will be trying “the Inzaghi” now

By: Daryl | May 25th, 2007

Have a good look at Pippo Inzaghi’s first goal for Milan in the Champions League final, then compare these two quotes:

“It was luck, but that is football” – Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez

“It was something that we rehearsed in training” – the man himself, Pippo Inzaghi.

Forget whether it was handball or not. Have Milan really been spending training sessions firing free kicks directly at Inzaghi? I’m sure there’s a good many Liverpool fans that would hope so, because one of them has to hit him in the face sooner or later.

But if it was rehearsed then Inzaghi may have fathered new footballing term. There’s the legendary Cruyff turn, which no self-respecting creative midfielder must possess these days. There’s the rabona, made a little more famous by Andres Vasquez recently. And now there’s “the Inzaghi,” where you run straight into a teammates perfectly good free kick, hoping for a deflection. It may not be pretty, but it wins Champions League Finals. Get practicing kids.

Hockey players have been doing it for years. Why shouldn’t footballers try intentional deflections?

Gotta give the guy some credit. Pippo has scored just like this before, including against Inter (much to my horror). Coincidence? Perhaps not.
