An Italian Whirlwind Of Emotion

By: chris | May 25th, 2009

The weekend began with the best of intentions as Paolo Maldini headed for his San Siro swansong. But when teams are relegated – or pushed to the very brink of relegation – things tend to go downhill very quickly.

Take, for example, Genoa and Torino, who embarked on a full out brawl following the former’s 3-2 win. Lame duck Diego Milito scored the winner which sent Torino into the relegation zone before a trip to Rome next weekend, and then lamer duck Thiago Motta – no stranger to controversy this year – told the granata bench to shush, which cued Royal Rumble Serie A Style.

When it came time for Paolo Maldini’s final lap around the San Siro, what was supposed to be unanimous adulation turned sour where a small section of supporters protested statements he made back in 2005 by unveiling a banner which read Baresi 6 after chanting “There’s only one captain”. A disgusting lack of respect from what is, once again, a very, very small portion of the Rossoneri faithful, who were, as expected, bowing in gratitude.

Ever the man of class, Paolo’s only response was simply “I’m proud I’m not one of them“.

But the weekend began on a truly tragic note in Parma on Saturday, where 19 year old Vicenza supporter Eugenio Bortolon fell from the Tardini upper deck to his death in the 70th minute. The game was resumed when it was reported the boy was on his way to the hospital to undergo surgery, but the surgery wasn’t successful and he was pronounced dead this morning due to his injuries.

You can see from the video below the location from where the boy fell onto the concrete, if you so choose.

Anger, sadness and then mourning – running the gamut of all the wrong emotions this weekend in the peninsula.

hi can i just ask what exactly did maldini say in 2005?
for all the service that he provided milan, fans can be a bit fickle…
but he was a gentleman abt it nonetheless.
i mean i teared up in sami’s last game, if i was a milan supporter id still be bawling.

You call Milito a “lame duck” because he’s about to move to Inter?
    Or because he scored?
Or because you don’t like him?
Or just because you have nothing better to say?

yowie, it was something along the lines of attacking the fans who jeered the team at the airport, he said something along the lines of calling them glory-hunters or mercenaries or something. Obviously didn’t take it well.

That fight erupted between Torino and Genoa basically because Torino has been the biggest underachieving team over the last few years, and with Genoa nothing to play for, the team kind of expected them to roll over. They did not.

Thank you Chris for your word of the day. It’s always good to learn something new.
Now you really got my interest. This is a copy of your own post.

    Lame Duck:
1: one that is weak or that falls behind in ability or achievement ; especially chiefly British : an ailing company
2: an elected official or group continuing to hold political office during the period between the election and the inauguration of a successor
3: one whose position or term of office will soon end
    — lame–duck \ˈlām-ˈdək\ adjective

So tell me now, which of the three meanings apply to Milito?
Honestly I don”t know what is it, but there’s something in you and Daryl that I don’t like at all.

Albo, the expression refers to him moving to Inter Milan shortly while finishing out his days at Genoa. They certainly didn’t mean anything bad by the use of the term and it is merely one of those phrases that translate poorly. As another example Chris noted Thiago Motta said “shush” but he really didn’t say precisely that : )
