And the 18,000th Premiership Goal is Scored by…

One would think that having a wife who was just voted “Most Photogenic Woman Ever” (yes, ever, beating out Audrey Hepburn), would be enough for one man. (What, you want photographic proof? Okay, fine. After the jump.)

It should be enough, but…no. Chelsea’s Ashley Cole just scored the 18,000th goal in the Premier League’s not-quite-eighteen-year history with this sweet little sharp-angled strike. (I believe that’s former Marseille captain Lorik Cana sliding harmlessly past, as Ashley treats him like a little orange cone. And yes, that does kind of break my heart.)

For those who are doing the math, that is more than 1,000 goals per season. And Chelsea did their part to move toward that next 1,000-goal mark even more quickly by slaughtering Sunderland 7-2, allowing the Blues to hold onto their razor-thin lead over Manchester United at the top of the table.

If you’re a Chelsea fan, or a Sunderland fan who’s a hardcore masochist, or just somebody who like seeing boatloads of goals, check out the highlights.

And here you go, gents. Mrs. Ashley Cole, Cheryl. Don’t say I never do anything for you.

Anyone else notice the England captain sliding in with the gun celebration? That's an appalling mockery of the Gilbert Arenas situation... What a disgrace.

Since we're being delusional here :

    Mallorca 7–1 Recreativo
    Cagliari 5–1 Bologna
    Palermo 5–1 Cagliari
    Bremen 8-1 Bielefeld
    Marseille 6-1 Caen
    Monaco 0-6 Bordeaux
    Lorient 5-0 Boulogne
    Lyon 8-1 Le Mans

Udine-Cagliari was a 4 goal win. That's one-sided. Real Madrid and Barcelona don't count because they've got the best attacks in the world? Then I guess Chelsea's doesn't count either.

This just smacks of trying in vain to find a talking point. Big wins have always happened. And they always will. Saying "X league needs to learn to defend" is just... Silly. Top clubs anywhere are ferocious both going forwards and in defence. Over the last 3 seasons, Barcelona and Real Madrid have faced 4 English teams (Real-Liverpool, Barça-Manchester, Barça-Chelsea, and Barça-Manchester again), resulting in : Real being demolished 5-0 on aggregate by Liverpool, Barça being beaten 1-0 on aggregate by Manchester, Barça winning on away goals after a 1-1 draw on aggregate with Chelsea, and Barça cruising to an easy win 2-0 over Manchester. If Real and Barça have "the best attacks in the world" and the Premier League needs to "learn how to defend", these results seem a bit strange. I mean, there was only one win by the "better" side! Three of the matches were draws, and three were wins for the "inferior" side. Or is there some other strange logic that prevails and shows that despite Barça not managing to win over two legs against Chelsea (I'm talking about a win in league conditions, so without the away goals rule), Barça have a great attack, and Chelsea's attack is laughable, meaning that if Barça wins 6-1 it's expected, but for Chelsea to win 7-2 it's all due to crap defences in England?
  • Oh, and I didn't say this well, but I was talking about huge one sided scorelines, not draws or one or two goal victories. Of the matches Shazback listed, only Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Benfica had similar scorelines. Barcelona and Madrid have the best attacks in the world, while the Liga Sagres is not a top one.
  • The 5-5 involved Jean-Alain Boumsong and Gabi Heinze.
  • Shazback
    Udinese 6-2 Cagliari (2008-09)
    Inter 5–3 Palermo (2009-10)
Real Madrid 7–1 Sporting de Gijón (2008-09)
    Barcelona 6–1 Zaragoza (2009-10)
    Lyon 5-5 Marseille (2009-10)
    Bremen 5–4 Hoffenheim (2008-09)
    Mönchengladbach 5–3 Hannover (2009-10)
    Benfica 8–1 Vitoria Setúbal (2009-10)

Europe sure doesn't have many top leagues...

  • The Premier League needs to learn how to defend. 7-2 and 9-0 scorelines do not happen in top leagues.
