It might save the F.A. Cup, which is in dire straits when even teams like Reading field weakened teams. Of course, cup competitions on the continent have long been taken much more seriously than in Britain, so it would be interesting to see how it played out there. Personally, I’d rather see a couple of lesser-known European teams out there than four British clubs in the tournament to begin with.

I really don’t think that domestic Cups are at all boring, or need any help from the CL. I’d have to say, considering the teams that often come out of the domestic cups, that a UEFA Cup spot is a lot more appropriate than a CL one. If they can’t finish in the top one or two spots in their national top flight league, they won’t be reaching the late stages of the most competitive club tournament in the world. It would water down the CL more than it would help Cups.

Redheaded stepchild here from the Portugal blog. Just letting you know that FC Porto won the Portuguese Cup last year. To give you an idea of how important the Portuguese Cup is, give it a Googling (it’s the Taca de Portugal). You’ll find the first Wiki article listed is actually the Portuguese Cup of foosball (table soccer). Yikes.

The cups in Italy and Spain have been diminished the past few years. I’m not sure this is the CL answer or whether it is part of the problem.
