Arrivederci Costacurta

Allesandro “Billy” Costacurta signed off on his long long long career with a goal yesterday, captured in the above video by a Milan fan. The 41 year scored this penalty in Milan’s 3-2 Serie A defeat to Udinese. The match meant nothing to either team, and Milan rested all the big names ahead of the Champions League Final, but the game was a great excuse to celebrate Costacurta’s distinguished career.

The central defender joined Milan in 1985, and except for a seasons loan to Monza, has played for the red and black his entire career. Trophy cabinet highlights include seven Scudettos and four (count ‘em) Champions Leagues (or even European Cups as it was known back then.) But here are my two favourite stats: Not only is he the oldest player ever to play in the Champions League, he also won the tournament in three different decades (1989, 1990, 1994, 2003.)

So arrivederci no. 5, but not for long. Billy will be be taking a role as assistant coach next season, so he’ll be with Milan a while longer.
