Arsene Is Angry, Theo Is Quick & Ads Are Good Again.
By: chris | August 31st, 2009Right now, I envision Arsene Wenger sitting at home in front of his giant monitor watching Theo running to pace, all the while stroking a Persian in his lap and bemoaning the state of the game to the walls. The lack of flair and artistry leading to the all too ugly complacency of anti-football; the witch hunts sullying the good name of good divers.
But while Arsene is angrily stroking his…cat, we can sit here and celebrate, as a new era of football ads is upon us. As The Beautiful Game so succinctly pointed out, “ads are getting good these days”. A welcome change to the viral videos of recent memory – with much thanks to Daryl, who is off this week on a one man campaign to eradicate VV’s.
Nike, back in the day the leader of brilliant football ads, a title they will hold until someone tops The Cage (unlikely), have released Theo Walcott’s pace upon us in an artistic manner sure to please Arsene. A welcomed change from the strange “did Nike film that on a mobile?” films to which we’ve been accustomed lately.
Though maybe the ad above is brilliant in its subtle irony; an accusation going unnoticed to the subject. Nike claims it’s about more than pace, and it is, but Theo has been accused of wielding only lightning pace as his top-end asset. The good folk at Nike will tell it’s more about desire and hunger and all those raw intangibles, but we can read between the lines.
And this is the second brilliant ad we’ve displayed in recent weeks. The one previous being that incredible Premiership ad for ESPN which gave one the extreme desire to get up out of their seat and run to a football game, proving ads don’t need to be effective to be good. After all, what use is an ad for television if it makes you want to go in person?
But at least they’ve got us watching something again.

Arsene doesn’t have a cat. He does have a dog, tho. He’s often seen in his neighborhood in N. London walking his dog. (and in an interview he once said he’s never had any other pets other than a dog).
Ok, I’m pedantic.
Liked the Theo ad.
