Arsene Wenger Accused of “Child Trafficking”.
By: chris | April 29th, 2009
As entire managements go, Bayern’s board wins the award for quotability hands down. Between Franz Beckenbauer, Uli Hoeness and Karl-Heinze Rummenigge, you’re bound to find volumes and volumes of fantastic missiles towards any and all in world football on a daily, sometimes hourly, basis.
Today Karl-Heinze has stepped up to the dais to give his thoughts on Arsene Wenger’s transfer policy. And then accused him of “child trafficking” and “kidnapping”. No hyperbole here. Nope.
From the horse’s mouth:
“One like Arsene Wenger signs hosts of players from France and elsewhere year-in year-out,” Rummenigge told Sport-Bild.“We have to take care that this sort of child trafficking is stopped.
“This has taken on a different scale in the meantime; the word kidnapping is not too far off anymore.”
This wasn’t a random attack. It was on the back of rumors that Bayern will be looking towards North London to fill their currently vacant managerial post.
Not sure Arsene would be too keen anymore, if we’re honest. The man needs to be finessed.
That said, maybe it’s time in sports we stopped equating…sporting activities…to things like war, kidnapping, rape and any other devious act of evil intent we can think of. While the ethics of his – and those of many clubs in England – means are certainly up for debate, I’m not sure he’s – yet – put a gun to anyone’s head and forced these kids out of France or French-speaking countries. Unethical? Yes. Felonious? No.
Though if we’re talking about Roman Abramovich dropping a helicopter into Reggina’s training ground to take a kid to London…..
