At age 40, Romario still has it
By: Bob | August 14th, 2006We’ll admit to being a bit skeptical when we heard that Brazilian legend Romario signed on to play for the expansion Miami FC in the United Soccer Leagues, the US second division.
At 40 years of age and his best years behind him, why would he want to play in a league that toils in obscurity, features back-to-back games and players that are almost half his age? While the money might be ok – reportedly $50,000 for five months of action – and the south Florida lifestyle to his liking, we still couldn’t see this working out for him.
But it has.
Romario scored this weekend, lifting Miami FC to a 2-0 win over the Charleston Battery. The goal was the forward’s 13th of the season in just 16 games, placing him second in the league in goals scored. At the age of 40. Remarkable regardless of the level.
Romario has now scored more than 970 goals in his career and if he spends another year or two shuttling between teams in the US and Brazil, it is likely he will reach the magical number of 1,000 goals for his career, a mark only achieved by fellow Brazilian Pele.
