Auf Wiedersehen Mehmet Scholl
By: Daryl | May 20th, 2007
Billy Costacurta wasn’t the only veteran to retire with a goal this weekend. So in what’s dangerously close to becoming a tradition we’ll bid farewell to another famous European player in his native tongue and say “auf Wiedersehen” to Bayern Munich’s Mehmet Scholl.
The 36 year old attacking midfielder was plenty creative, could dribble better than most and was deadly with a dead ball. He began his career with Karlsruhe in 1989 before joining Bayern way back in 1992 and only retiring yesterday. I make that 15 years on the famous German team, winning a record eight Bundesliga championships as well the Champions League in 2001. He scored in his farewell appearance yesterday, a 5-2 Bayern win over Mainz. Video after the jump (Scholl’s is the second goal.)
Despite seven years on the German national team, he somehow – mostly through a succession of injuries – never represented Germany at the World Cup. He was a key part the Germany team that won Euro 96 though, which is more than most of us can say.
