Aussie Rules: Coach Chokes Player and gets into Hot Water
By: Bob | October 17th, 2006
Adelaide United has been receiving a lot of press lately with the Brazilian legend Romario agreeing to chase after his mythical 1,000th goal by playing for the Australia side for four games. The headlines this weekend were of a different sort, however. Adelaide United coach and former Socceroos captain John Kosmina is facing disciplinary action from the A-League for his part in a choking incident that occurred at the end of a match against the Melbourne Victory.
With three minutes left in the game and Melbourne down a goal, the ball went out of bounds and into Kosmina’s arms on the bench. The coach was less than eager to give the ball back to Melbourne skipper Kevin Muscat (Millwall fans should remember him as being their lovable thug of a skipper) and Muscat proceeds to knock Kosmina off of his chair. The coach responded by getting up and choking Muscat, something a lot of players and managers have probably dreamt of doing themselves.
My favorite part of this story is the explanation given by Melbourne coach Ernie Merrick.
He said Muscat was in a hurry to retrieve the ball, as Victory was behind with only four minutes to play, and did nothing wrong.
“I don’t think the coach of the other team was very keen on the ball coming back into play,” Merrick said.
“I think it was a series of circumstances – a light chair, a slippery surface.
“Kevin reached in for the ball, there was a collision, no doubt about it, the chair seems to slip away, Kossie fell over.”
Let this be a lesson to Romario and anyone else with designs on playing in the A-League. Sitting on those chairs on the sidelines is not for the faint of heart.
