Bad day at the Premiership office for Chelsea
By: Daryl | April 28th, 2007
Today’s lunchtime Premiership action was torture for Chelsea fans. I know because I watched Chelsea vs Bolton with a Blues fan, and he wasn’t happy. Half time saw Chelsea leading Bolton 2-1, with Man Utd trailing 1-0 at Everton. That had United and Chelsea level on points and the Premiership looking wide open.
But 45 minutes (plus injury time) later United had staged an incredible comeback and won 4-2, Kevin Davies had equalized for Bolton and United were five points clear (six if you count their superior goal difference) at the top. As a neutral I’m disappointed, because what I really really wanted was for the Chelsea vs Manchester United Premiership fixture on May 9th to be an absolute ding-dong title decider, but now United can lose that game 10-0 and still take the title, provided they beat Man City and West Ham. It’s not over yet, but it’s getting there. I can only imagine what Chelsea fans are feeling.
First up, I’d be thinking about penalties. There was a definite handball from Bolton’s Abdoulaye Meite, though it might have been outside the box, while Drogba and Lampard both got knocked around a bit in the area without attracting any sympathy from the man with the whistle. If Mourinho’s comments about not getting penalties were intended to force a few decisions from referees, then it backfired.
Second, I’d be looking at the Manchester United goal-scorers: John O’Shea (61), Phil Neville (67), Wayne Rooney (78), Chris Eagles (90+4). Wait a minute, Phil Neville? Isn’t he supposed to play for Everton now? Wonder what Mourinho will have to say about that…
