Baggio & Friends Return For Stefano Borgonovo
By: chris | October 9th, 2008An emotional return to the pitch for Roberto Baggio, Roberto Donadoni, Franco Baresi and many of the other superstars from the Milan and Fiorentina squads of the late-80’s & early-90’s in a charity match for Stefano Borgonovo. Stefano is another star felled by the worrying trend of Italian football players struck down by ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease), with a new theory surrounding pesticides once used on the pitches of calcio. The crowd of 30,000 certainly enjoyed the show, but even more important was the money raised to help combat the disease.

This is one aspect I’ve always appreciated of Italy and Italian fans - despite the scandals, rivalries and all dark sides of football, there is always plenty of space, time and opportunities for charitable events like this (take for example Nazionale Cantanti, Nazionale Piloti etc.). Way to go guys!
