Barca 6 – Real 2: The Best Team on Planet Earth.

By: chris | May 2nd, 2009

Real Madrid had won 17 of 18. They’d not lost since the last Clasico in December. They were, Champions League aside, the hottest team in Europe since the arrival of Juande Ramos. They were playing in front of the echoing thunder and passion of a football mecca in Madrid, the Bernabeu.

They were still no match for Barcelona.

And perhaps it was that scintillating run which felled them in the end. The justified swelling of confidence which had them mistakenly believing they could hang with the best team on the planet. Chelsea got it right, whether you agree with their tactics or not. Had the Blues tried for the win they would’ve been sent back to London with their tear-drenched hands buried in their laps and a glorified friendly coming up midweek.

(As I’m typing this Gerard Pique leads the attack to score number six. Yes, that’s centerback Gerard Pique.)

It had all the hallmarks of a timeless classic. Real went up early after Sergio Ramos dribbled Eric Abidal back into 1987 and Higuain was given enough space to land an airplane in the box for what seemed to be at the time a very good start to a very good day for the blancos. And then it all went upside down. Thierry Henry turned back the clock and began skipping by defenders like they weren’t even there, exquisitely finishing past Casillas for the first before Carles Puyol – yes, Carles Puyol – scored the second just minutes later off a free kick. Then came Messi, who was back to his brilliant best, and shortly after the halftime whistle.

About ten minutes into the second half Sergio Ramos made things interesting and closed the gap to one, but all that really did was make the fall a little harder for Real fans. Two minutes later Messi restored the two goal lead and a further 15 after that, Henry capped his theory questioning whether time really exists at all.

The first twenty minutes aside, this was vintage Barca. It appeared as though teams were going to trade goals and leads for 90 minutes, but once the Catalans settled down with possession the game was effectively over. Nearly impossible to take off the ball and simply too good with it.

And thus this means two things:

i. Barcelona only have to win one of the remaining four games to seal the Spanish title – so start the engraving now.
ii. Chelsea may want to suck up their pride and haul the team bus back onto the pitch in London. You simply cannot play this Barcelona team.

How anyone can even try to argue that this team is not the best in the world is ridiculous. Just look at what they do!

After barca went up 4-2 they didnt even try to score anymore, yet two more trickled in.

    Simply a spectacular team.

We might as well just call Barca “Goosebumps” cause that’s what they cause time and time again…

And for the 475th time, if they don’t hold the trophy up in Rome this year, there is no justice in the entire universe. None whatsoever.

They are an incredible team, and I think they are the best in the world right now, but if they don’t hold the trophy in Rome, it won’t be because of any injustice – it will be because they didn’t do what they were capable of. The most talented teams don’t always win – you still have to play the games. No one deserves to win the Champions League.

were we watching the same game? sure barce played well but the defense from real madrid was not existent, not only did they play a very high line with very slow defenders even their midfield was clueless. The problem is at the moment barce are much better then every team in the la liga, that doesnt mean they better then every team in europe. Dont delude yourselves into thinking barce will win that easily at the bridge, the defense of chelsea is second to none and their midfield will destroy you if given half a chance and i mean physically destroy you. Drogba is a man with a mission as well and with puyol and marquez out it will be a tough ask to handle him. Also shorter pitch so much less space for barce to play passing game.

Yes they are the best team on planet at the moment and yes they deserve to win it all and anything less is pure lucky for the rest.
The dribbling ability and the pace by Messi is indescribable, this team will embarrass Chelsea at home.
Gus achieved great results with Korea employing the same tactics but after the first encounter the Catalans will out smart the ugly to watch anti football.

Not even close to being the best. Madrid were horrible and Barca struggled to find anything to open up Chelsea at home. Who should I reming you remain Third in the Premier League. Are they the only team that can challenge the top 4 in England? Yes, for sure. But lets not get carried away here. They are not better than Liverpool, Chlesea, Arsenal and especially the true kings of Europe, Man U.

We’ll see on Wednesday. Given that Barca couldn’t manage one against Chelsea at home this week, it’s a bit early to genuflect.

Given that Barca had 4 very clear chances against the “second to none” defending of Chelsea (aka the relegation-team double decker bus) things should be a lot easier when Chelsea has to open up this wednesday.

the current european capital of trophies is manchester, england…when barca can stop crying about chelsea’s physicality and tactics long enough to win a big game in europe, then you can call them the best team in the world…

until then, it’s all smoke and mirrors

The best in Spain by miles but not yet in world. Spanish league has been in bretty sad state for years and no one seems to be able to defend there. This fits to Barca mean striking machine and makes them look ossum, but in CL we will see if they can be hailed as world’s best. They had first real test in CL against Chelsea and were shut out by their brilliant defence and I am worried that at home Chelsea will win and this would mean that they certaintly are not the best in the world and also world title belongs to Manchester United at the moment so they can’t be hailed as the best yet!

You know what I love about spain? had the worst of seasons? lying in the bottom of the charts? it’s ok… all u need really is one good game against a so-called realmadrid or a team with no tactical coach like barca. i think that’s how pellegrini survived!

If guardiola can beat chelsea! then so can I!
