Barcelona Explodes, Titi Gets a Header, and Ray Hudson Offers Pearls of Wisdom

By: Laurie | January 17th, 2009

So today I get the following email from my co-blogger Chris:

Weekend Post

Barca are now the best team ever through half a season in La Liga. 50 of a potential 57 points. Quite the feat.

Also, Titi scored a header, which is probably worth an entire post in itself. (The Alves cross on that goal was to die for.)

As a Thierry Henry fan, I found that kind of insulting. I mean, I clearly remember him getting a header for France during the Greece friendly in November, 2006. But just in case you don’t remember that one, here is today’s (at the top). It’s a cracker.

I caught the last twenty minutes of today’s game — Barcelona vs. Deportivo la Coruna. Result: Barca, 5-0. Messi-Henry-Eto’o-Henry-Eto’o. And Deportivo la Coruna is not a bad club. It’s just that Barca are that incredible this year. It’s as if there’s only one team on the field, and everybody else is just cones to be run around on the way to goal. Their goal differential for the first half of the season is an amazing +46. Seriously.

The best part of watching the game today for me was seeing some of the Deportivo players, who had just gotten slaughtered, joyously swapping shirts with the Barcelona guys afterwards. I think I saw some serious idol-worship. (Was that Julian de Guzman who swapped with Eto’o? Adorable.)

Also, I was watching the stream in Arabic, so I missed the Hudsonisms. That doesn’t mean you need to. From Chris. (The gist, not verbatim):

[2:03:16 PM] Laurie says: Do you have a source for “best La Liga start ever”?
[2:03:27 PM] Chris says: Ray Hudson. Like 247 times.
[2:03:39 PM] Laurie says: That’s going in the post.
[2:05:06 PM] Chris says: Best back and forth between Ray’s yin and his yang.
Beginning of the game “The greatest player on earth, Lionel Messi”.
About 20 mins later: “This boy [Dani Alves] might be the best player on Barcelona.”

Not sure if he’s saying Barcelona are not of this earth or what.

(You can catch the rest of the goals individually at TVGolo.com, or all together at 101 Great Goals.)

What does Ray Hudson mean when he says "That's an ARABIA LIKE FINISH"? Help me understand. I'm American.
    Thank, Judson
  • Hands off Ray Hudson!! For pure entertainment value (read: the coining of wonderfully absurd phrases like "Gennaro Gattuso is playing like a Tyrannosaurus Rex with hemorroids"), he is THE reason for having a GolTV subscription.
  • I hate Ray Hudson, the man is seriously the most biased commentator ever (Andy Gray comes in a close second) and what's worse is that he's biased towards Real. Absolutely horrible. I just listen to the Spanish commentary.

All you "HENRY" haters watch and WEEP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    "LE ROY" has returned!
Great strikers are so far and few in between, fantastic pass no doubt but the finish should be commended as well!
  • Ray Hudson = game on mute

"Not of this earth" is a pretty good description of Barca right now. They're definitely the team to beat in the CL, but once it hits the knockouts, a lot can happen. They're playing just amazing football, though.

    Meh !

Lyon will give them a good challenge. I promise.

lisette its probably because alves is fucking boss and the best right back in the world...no looks aint shit for the fuckin boss. i mean seriously who fuckin does that. what an animal...and boss in case i forgot.

Ah you are correct but I honestly don't care where he turns as long as he keeps putting out crosses of that quality.

And yes he was worth every penny Barca paid for him and it would have been worth it to pay double that amount because the things that guy does for Barcelona are just amazing. Great crosses, excellent passes, and he's a good defender as well. Additionally, he and Messi get along very well and they understand each other so they're always pairing up and doing some amazing things.

Why the hell does ALVES Looks to the opposite way when he kicks the f**ing ball. Take a look at the vid, I'm not crazy. That shit its just insane. Remember the CL pass that he did to Messi. Does he know that when he does that the ball its gonna end in the back of the net. I mean WTF its he thinking. And yeah he's worth all that money. I'm thinking that he's gonna start a new "tactic"; The Alves look away shot. ;)

In terms of mistakes, Phil made so many more than Ray. Ray was outclassed by Phil today; we'll see if Phil can keep up his performance next week.

Phil, please, learn the difference between Keita and Yaya, Keita and Eto'o, Puyol and Messi, and Messi and Xavi.

Puyol and Messi should be the easiest. Puyol is the one with the mop on his head, you idiot.
