Barnsley Fans Score Against Man Utd: Funny or Idiotic? (Plus: Jan Molby’s “Lost Goal”)

By: Daryl | October 28th, 2009

I spotted this on Dirty Tackle, who in turn had spotted it on 101GG, and can’t decide what to make of it. Seems that towards the end of Man Utd’s 2-0 Carling Cup away win over Barnsley last night, two Tykes fans ran on and combined to put the ball past Ben Foster as he was taking a goal kick. Foster gets a foot in, but pitchinvader#1 stabs a pass to pitchinvader#2 who flicks it up and volleys home. Pretty decent finish.

Maye this is the future for the Carling Cup? Each team fields a mix of senior players, youth players and shifty looking young men from the crowd? Or maybe not.

As with the Russian fan who scored for Spartak Moscow recently, no harm was done (except maybe a little to Ben Foster’s reputation) and it’s admittedly pretty funny. But it’s still a pitch invasion, and therefore irresponsible. I’m leaning every so slightly towards funny, but with the caveat that if and when the next duo of pitch invaders try the same thing we brand them as unoriginal copycats.

Speaking of goals from the English League Cup, how about this one from Jan Molby…

This is from 1985, back when it was called the Milk Cup. Liverpool beat Man Utd 2-1, with a brilliant solo goal from Jan Molby. Unfortunately the game was played during a TV blackout and so only fans present at the game got to see it. 101GG has the full story. Basically, the goal is now available and was recently aired on LiverpoolTV. Take a look:

I remember Molby as a rather portly central midfielder with a Scouse-Danish hybrid accent who didn’t often leave the center circle. But seems in his younger days he was a lot more sprightly.

Funny: yes. It also enabled the keeper to waste more time. Had it been 0-1 it could have killed off any chance for an equalizer. 0-2 it was basically over. 'No harm, no foul' - perhaps sometimes it is best to remember that it's a game.

Johnny is right though, the security should have been far better.

it was great that foster tried to defend it. now if he would have called for offsides that would have been the icing on the cake

Could've been worse, but ended hilarious.

Ultimately, that is supposed security, I mean, come on!

dont forget that baseball incident...when a father and son duo attacked a first base coach...i think it was chicago? minesota??...and whole team came out and stomped, kicked, punched, fore armed, everything u could imagine...

to me this is funny...i mean as long as no one gets hurt i have no problem...but untill then...i guess there wont b any additional sanctions....

mayb they should do what they do in the nfl....i forgot was team/player it was but i remember i fan got on the field picked up the football (american football) and ran with the ball and player on defense straight laid him out!!!!...that should make fans think twice...

ps i dont think that has happened again...

it wasnt that bad. and saying that there arent idiots amongst italian football fans as well is laughable at best.

the spartak guy had way better form but sepp and platini would frown about signing him up because of 6+5.

Cheers up everyone - it's not like anyone died.

    I thought it was brilliant.
  • Although I guess they are technically free agents, so he could sign them if he wanted.
  • Don't they know the transfer window is closed?

not so sure about the actual pitch invaders, but the chanting of 'fergie sign 'em up' was kinda funny.

yeaaaa Signore Cappello is going to say that Italian soccer is run by "Ultras"? at least theyre not idiots in Italy
  • Adam
    Idiotic. Stay off the pitch.

Having seen it since, I can see why maybe it might be seen a funny.

At the time though, I booed as loud as I could. The timing was poor really, because everyone was looking at the real thugs in the away end. It just threw us into a guilty light.

So, I think it was idiotic, and I want them banned for life.

Perhaps the answer lies in Mark Robin's (our manager) reaction. The normally docile man yelled at a bunch of stewards 'til the pitch invaders were caught.
