Barthez and Kahn: The Gifts that Keep on Giving
By: Bob | April 3rd, 2007
As we fill the void before the Champions League matches today and as I warm up my fingers to liveblog, there are a couple of moments from this past weekend featuring former Champions League victors worth highlighting. Way back in 1992-93 a young Fabien Barthez helped Olympique de Marseille defeat AC Milan 1-0 in the final. Barthez’s contemporary, Oliver Kahn, has won the Champions League twice with Bayern Munich, but will not be playing today against AC Milan because of his piss throwing tantrum.
Barthez and Kahn are still strapping on the gloves and playing in goal and entertaining us all with their hijinks. The clip below shows Ollie in action against Schalke this weekend. One of these days he is going to snap off someone’s neck, eat the brains and pillage a village. I’ve seen him do it many times in my recurring Oliver Kahn nightmares.
And then there is Barthez, who is now toiling in net for Nantes. As you can see on the France Offside, he is up to his old tricks, blundering his way around the goal. Even when he was on top of his game he was a heart attack waiting to happen for fans of his teams. Apparently he was taken out of the match after his mistake and decided that it would be more fun to go home and take a shower than to stick around and watch his team lose. Like Kahn, he was not punished for his actions.
