Battling Keepers Come to the Attention of Authorities

By: Martha | January 20th, 2008

Dudu AouateJust over a week ago, Deportivo La Coruna coach Miguel Ãngel Lotina dropped out-of-form keeper Dudu Aouate and replaced him with Gustavo Munua, presumably in the hope that a change at the back would help lift his team out of the depths of La Liga. Little did he know that his simple decision would leave him without a first-team keeper, and and with both Aouate and Munua facing questioning by the authorities.

After being dropped, Aouate vented to the press, declaring himself “hurt,” and the decision “unfair.” The next day, after a peaceful training session, Munua expressed his dissatisfaction with Aoute’s opinion by punching him in the face, leaving his fellow keeper with an eye wound that required eight stitches. Yeah, that’s a recipe for climbing out of the relegation zone.

Immediately after the incident, Lotina announced his intention to suspend both players for the remainder of the season but, after a multi-hour meeting with the team’s four captains, decided to leave them out for a week, replacing them with the reserve team keeper. Both men were forced to apologize to their teammates who, based on the press conference held by the captains, held them jointly responsible for the mess, and accepted their apologies. After this weekend’s trip to Almería, then, it was supposed to be over and done with — back to training with the team for the keepers, and a first-team goalie during next weekend’s match.

But it’s not over, and now the courts have gotten involved: Both Aouate and Munua have been called to make statements on Wednesday before the “local prosecutor,” so there could be a whole lot more chaos ahead — just the thing a team sitting 19th in the table needs as they try to pull things together.

Reminds me of a story about two American football players. For some college team, in hopes of starting, the back up punter on an American football team STABBED! the starter on the team!
