Beckham Scores from Sixty Yards Out

By: Laurie | May 25th, 2008

Picture this: The LA Galaxy are beating Kansas City, 2-1. There’s one minute of stoppage time. LA concedes a corner. Kansas City knows that this is their last shot, so goalkeeper Kevin Hartman moves down the field and into the Galaxy box. And then…

Ladies and gents, this is what $6.5 million a year buys you in MLS.

Daniel go to a soccer field. Mark an x 70 yards from goal and then dribble at speed up to the mark and strike the ball into the goal from the mark. No one else on the pitch even. No worries about Defenders near by or that the final whistle will blow – just try to execute the mechanics. You won’t be able too. You can have a hundred goes at it and you won’t manage it. You know not of what you speak.

Hit the nail on the head Daniel, wow he can hit a ball in a straight line, easily impressed in the MLS.

How about the Beckhamheads realize that Daniel or I aren’t professional soccer players. Anyone on the pitch could’ve scored that. Considering the fact that if Donovan had been booked instead of getting that ridiculous penalty decision, Hartman wouldn’t have been up there anyway.

Why did nobody foul Beckham? The Kansas City players just stood there and watched him shoot and admired his goal.

exactly francesco haha… i think they wanted him to score. Nathan trust me its not difficult to knock a ball forward with all the time in the world and no defenders rushing in. he couldve pulled out his mobile or “cell” and found out the weather conditions before placing that lol

Seriously someone should tell the Kansas City players what a professional foul is.

MLS is pathetic !!! It is comparable to a third division of any european championship.Having Beckam in Mls doesn’t help league to improve its quality. You , American , have to love this sport and you are millions of miles far from that.

If any other player (let’s say on any pitch) can do it, why don’t they? I’ve seen plenty of exposed nets since I began watching MLS and I’ve seen players miss them from 20 feet. Since I also follow English football, I have spent many years watching some of the best players in the world “punting the ball up the field” to no one and nothing (except maybe a fellow in the end stands). No one said this was the best goal of Beckham’s life, but it was a hard, clean strike that bent a bit to hit the center of the net from 70 yards.

Come on. It was fun to watch, fun for the player and fun for the team, and it was, whether you think it the simplest of tasks or not, in fact, quite uncommon. What’s not to like?

Frankly, when you look at what other players can do (with a keeper in the net), Beckham’s Galaxy goal looks very unimpressive. And we all know the lad is capable of much much better.

I’d argue that Beckham made that look a lot lot easier than it was.

Also Worth remembering that he did something similar(ish) with a keeper in goal, back in 1996:

For those still quibbling about how commonplace these strikes are, here’s a collection of ten the Mirror dug up (much as I hate referencing the mirror):
    http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/2008/05/26/3pm-video-beckham-s-60-yarder-and-the-top-10-long-range-goals-89520-20430352/
Only one is over 70 yards, which was also fun since it came from a goalie, Stevie’s made it into one of my favorite supporter songs, and everything Roberto Carlos does is spectacular in my eyes.

Still, this one makes the list and since it impressed players coaches that commented as well as the non-U.S. media, I would agree with Daryl about it looked easier than it was (there’s actually a video shot from above and behind that makes that more evident as it shows the curve that centered the ball before it hit the net).

note: Gerrard song available on request…BTW, shouldn’t offside have a song library with ratings for raunchiness, or rhyme or anything?

Roger, then of Espanyol, scored three from his own half in one year with the goalkeeper off the line, not in the other box.

Becks can enter the pantheon of coolness if he slaps in two more this year. Until then, meh.
