Beckham to Captain England Again?

David Beckham relinquished the armband of the England team immediately after World Cup 2006. One and a half years later, he just may get to put it on again.
But don’t get too excited, Beckham fans. It’s looking to be a one-off deal.
In what could be a move to phase out Beckham gracefully but permanently, new England coach Fabio Capello appears to be set to give Becks a one-shot captainship which will coincide with Beckham’s hundredth cap.
Goldenballs will be back as skipper for one game only - his 100th cap in the friendly against Switzerland on February 6 which will also mark Capello’s first match in charge.
In the wake of England’s defeat against Croatia and failure to reach the Euro 2008 finals, there was grave disquiet inside the FA about how to fill Wembley for the February friendly.
Suddenly the marketing men are far more cheerful!
As well as being Capello’s first game in charge, the Switzerland game will be turned into a celebration of Beckham becoming only the fifth player ever to reach 100 England caps.
You could say that Capello owes this to Beckham, since Becks more or less saved his butt in Real Madrid’s La Liga resurgence last season. The rumor was that Capello was on the road to being dumped mid-season when Beckham hit his stride again and helped push Madrid to the top of the table and their first league title in years.
Of course, Capello was then sacked immediately after the season. But it’s a whole lot easier to get a good job (like, oh, say, England manager) when you’ve got “League Winner” on your resume instead of “Perennial Also-Ran.”
So now we have Beckham as England captain again. And Capello gets a one-game reprieve before facing the choice: A team that sucks with Beckham, or a team that sucks without him.
