Beckham Severely Injured; Will Miss World Cup

By: Dave Martinez | March 14th, 2010

SOCCER-ITALY/It was the hobble felt ’round the world. One second, David Beckham is squaring up on a ball, unopposed. The next, he is begging for a change, hopping on his right leg, in severe, tearful pain. And just like that, in the dying minutes of a game, he lost what he had fought so hard to earn; one more shot at the World Cup.

In one of the strangest injuries to be seen in sometime, a casual possession has taken out one of football’s biggest names. Early diagnosis show a snapped achilles tendon on his left leg, which is projected to be a 5 to 8 month recovery for the former England captain. Fabio Capello must also be feeling the pain as an already hobbled Three Lions squad could ill afford to suffer another blow like this.

His injury could be career threatening, which puts the remainder of his time with Major League Soccer in severe jeopardy. Beckham has been a major revenue generator for MLS, and his absence may be a crucial blow to a league already teetering on a labor strike.

What will this mean for Beckham? Can this be the end of his career? How badly will this hurt MLS? And how badly will England suffer his absence? Share your thoughts with us.

  • Could have used him this past game with Germany. Poor showing, needed someone to fire up the spirit and turn things around. Heal Becks Heal!
  • Hmm. Matt may be onto something. There are drugs like Cipro that cause increased risk of Achilles tendon rupture.

Quick! Test Beckham's water bottle! And yes! Call Dan Brown! (Or maybe Oliver Stone.)

Does anyone think it's interesting that David Beckham falls mysteriously injured only days after wearing the green and gold scarf of the anti-glazer protests?

I smell conspiracy! The Glazer's had Beckham offed to send a message!

Somebody call Dan Brown, it's time to write the next sequel to the Da Vinci Code.
  • what if we were to do the opposite?.

Shame! He always has something to add to the game. Looks very unlikely that he will play in the world cup, or even for England ever again. This means he won't be the first England player to appear at 4 world cups, and that the cap record will stay for a while longer.
  • If it had happened in early January, it could be conceivable that he would recover in time, but with less than 3 months left to the World Cup, I don't think he has a good chance of recovery.

    England are frakked!

Now all they have is the rest of the team. :)
  • Sad. I know I've been as hard as anybody on Beckham for his lack of commitment to MLS, but he truly deserved one last World Cup for England.

I really don't think it's nearly as bad for England, or MLS, as all that. The one it really sucks for is Beckham himself. I don't always love the guy, but you can't question his dedication to his national shirt, and it must be just gutting for him to know his World Cup career is over. I do hope it doesn't hurt Milan, because that one-point gap at the top of Serie A makes it look like it will be a fun spring to watch Italian football.

i don't think Beckham will be the be all and end all for the continued success or eventual failure of MLS.

i do feel genuinely really bad for the guy, being injured like that, couldn't possibly suck more. here's hoping he gets well and can continue playing whenever that is.
