I respect his decision to seek more competitive play. It shows he hasn’t completely sold his soul.

I blame Tom Cruise for Beckham’s decision to leave L.A. Living next door to that douchebag would drive anybody half way around the world.

Adas, AEG would never allow themselves to get pushed around financially like that. It may not be perfect, but AEG and the Galaxy will be well-compensated. From the LA Times:

Although financial details of the deal have not been revealed, it is said to involve more than the $10 million to $15 million that the Galaxy and MLS were seeking for allowing Beckham to leave on a permanent basis.

Part of the money will come from AC Milan as payment for the extended loan, with a further payment coming at the time of the eventual transfer. Milan’s total is more than the $3 million the club initially was offering.

A larger amount will come from Beckham himself as compensation for leaving MLS with two years remaining on his contract.

The real tragedy is the MLS loses out on making money off of this. Beckham comes back for half the season (if he’s not injured). Then he goes back to Milan. All they get is the money he forfeits for leaving. Milan, a team in Italy, have just shown how easy it is to push around our entire league. In the very least, MLS should have demanded that he return for the whole season. Then he could leave on his own.

The problem with the idea of Beckham saving American Soccer, is that unlike Pelé, who all but managed it before, Beckham is a technically good player who isn’t that exciting to watch – at least not the sort of player to take on three players and make football look beautiful to people who don’t understand it. To appreciate Beckham’s drop-the-ball-on-a-50p-from-60-yards game, you have to have a certain appreciation for the sport in the first place. Beckham was doomed to fail unless he was part of a group of players going over there who provided the many beautiful ways of playing football. Pelé had that – there was a genuine influx of players from Europe, albeit at the end of thier careers, but nonetheless. There was an element of “Dreamteam” about the Cosmos, but Beckham never inspired that in his fellow pros, because he’d already been part of his dreamteam at Real. Had he been able to convince a load of other pros to go to America, he would have stood half a chance of making it work.
