Bidone d’Oro Nominees Announced, Serie A Stars Duck.
By: chris | November 17th, 2009
With December fast-approaching, The Season is in the air. Christmas? Absolutely not. It’s awards season. The Argentine sensation known as Lionel Messi has already nabbed the Onze d’Or, a precursor to the Ballon d’Or (with a heft more patriotism) which has predicted the BdO three times in the last four years. Otherwise they select a Frenchman.
And while the footballing Oscars may be comin’ round the corner, Italy is kicking off with the equivalent of Hollywood’s Razzies: the Bidone d’Oro (Golden Trash Bin). The award handed to Serie A’s worst player, often relative to expectations.
The list of losers reads…
Juan Pablo Carrizo (Lazio)
Nelson Dida (Milan)
Felipe Melo (Fiorentina-Juventus)
Klaas Jan Huntelaar (Milan)
Julio Baptista (Roma)
Mancini (Inter)
Christian Poulsen (Juventus)
Ricardo Quaresma (Inter)
Ronaldinho (Milan)
Tiago (Juventus)
Worth noting all of these lads at one point commanded a hefty sum and none of the above are Italian. Perhaps a subtle dig at the practice of buying big-moneyed foreigners here? Quite possibly. Especially since a few of the above have no business being nominated this year.
(RAI Radio 2 are also not big fans of Juve’s midfield, apparently.)
The past winners read a little something like this:

Three of the six (Rivaldo, Bobo & Quaresma) were big signings just that summer, while Adiano’s back-to-back “victory” prove they’re not adverse to defending champions.
With this knowledge, two candidates stick out in mind: last year’s winner Quaresma and epic disappointment Klaas-Jan Huntelaar.
So either pick two substitute appearances from a man Mourinho clearly doesn’t want or the zero goals in 7 games from the man Louis van Gaal dubbed “the best player in the world, bar none, inside the penalty box”.
Come on down, Klaas.

Dida should not be on the list, simply for his performances in the Champions League…
Quaresma gets absolutely no chance at Inter to make a difference, which is why, as an AC Milan fan I would agree with the assessment that Huntelaar is the frontrunner for this prestigious award.

Melo? Dida?
Either there’s something I don’t know about Serie A, or there are some strange nominations.

Or does it just mean that the fans have a uniformly low expectation of Italian players?
I kid, but only a little. Perhaps the Italian players are not so hyped as some of these people the clubs bring in from overseas. Many of them were billed as ringers. Aside from all the attention Cassano got this summer (will he wont he leave Samp), I cant think of an Italian player who got the same sort of media attention.

It has to be Huntelaar.

I’d say Melo

Remember it’s not just the last few months, it’s the full year. My money still goes to Huntelaar, with a close second to Quaresma to repeat Adriano’s feat.
MoMoney, do you ever watch Serie A? You won’t find one Juventus fan or Viola fan who trashes him.
Players like Poulsen, Tiago, Dinho, and Dida shouldn’t be on there, as they aren’t great, but they aren’t terrible either. In replacement I would put maybe Acquafresca, Bertolo, Emiliano Morreti, and Rubinho on there.

Why would Emiliano Moretti be a contender for the Bidone D’Oro? He’s been playing superbly at the back for Genoa on his return to Italy.

I’ll admit I’ve only watched 3-4 Genoa games thus far (Juve, Inter, Valencia, maybe another) and each time he has been the weak link in a leaky defense. Coming from a team like Valencia, I would have expected better.

How about Amauri ? He has been having a shocker for 8 months now.

Before October, yeah, I’d throw him in the bit Dhaw

I say this with full bias as a Fiorentina fan, but Melo gets special mention when you consider la Viola got Marchionni for him and it paved the way for them to get Zanetti for pennies. Hope Juve is enjoying the Brazilian mercenary!

Also, the Bidone D’Oro always goes to players who had a pretty big transfer fee, so someone like Moretti who moved for near nothing wouldn’t even be considered.
That’s why this year’s award will most definitely fall in the hands of Klaas-Jan Huntelaar

As a massive Fiorentina fan, watching Melo suck up to his new found Gobbi as though he’d been with them forever makes me physically ill- I am pulling for him to win the Bidone d’oro as his true Gobbizzazione.
