Blanco’s Bunny Hop and Other Signature Footballer Moves
By: Daryl | April 21st, 2009Anyone watching Chicago Fire vs KC Wizards this past weekend saw Cuauhtémoc Blanco pull out the old Cuauteminha. Or, as Max Bretos calls it: “The Bunny Hop”. You can see the World Cup ‘98 version on 101GG.
It’s not my favourite trick in the world because Blanco loses all acceleration when he does it, but I love the idea of players having signature moves. Sort of like WWFWWE wrestlers.
So, I was hoping that Offside readers would humour me by helping to compile a list of players with signature moves.
Basically the player doesn’t have to be the only one in the world who does the trick or move, but he does have to be famously associated with it.
To get us started I’m thinking:
John Cruyff: The Cruyff Turn
Kerlon: Seal Dribble
Any more suggestions out there? If we get enough, we’ll compile them all into one big post.

Is ‘Zidane’s roulette’ the French term for “Maradona turn?”
Also, I’m pretty sure the flip-flap was invented by Rivelino. My suggestion is the Matthews, which I remember learning alongside the Cruyff turn in youth soccer without ever knowing who it was named for.Posted from

Stephen McManus: Hoof the baw’ up field!

Ugh, I hate Max Bretos… everytime he speaks, I feel like there needs to be a little bar running on the bottom of the screen that should just be one long continuous apology to the rest of the world saying things like “he’s the only person that we employ that knows broadcasting AND soccer, so cut him some slack” and “at least he’s enthusiastic!” He is such a terrible commentator, ugh
And laurie, i agree with you about the zidane roulette, it was a cool looking move, too, and especially since he was taller than a lot of the other players (and the double roulette he pulls in that vid was pretty smooth)

Toby – that would be Kerlon and his seal dribble.

Francesco Totti’s signature has become the cucchiaio (chip shot) and has scored many beautiful goals over the years with it.

Okocha had that funky running feint he does. No idea what it’s called though.
Denilson was the first person I’d seen do that chop with his heel to change direction on the run.
Can we name Ibrahimovic’s flailing overhead heel pass up the wing to Maicon?

Brilliant, but he’s not really known for it.
Totti might go up for his love of backheels, too.
Del Piero is known for his goals where he fires from the left corner of the 18′ and it curls into the top right corner. In Italy something like this is called a goal “alla Del Piero.”

I believe Ricardo Quaresma is pretty known for his “trivelas”, or shooting with the outside of his foot:

Apologies if it really belongs to someone else.

Everyone who does that must have cojones of steel!

Wow Wilson – thank you for informing me that the ‘Aurelio’ is not just a FIFA trick (called the Hocus Pocus there).
Speaking of the diving Ronaldo, isn’t he the namesake of a certain chop dribble?
