Bordeaux Stomps on Vannes’ Cinderella Dreams (And NSFW Random-Naked-Woman-in-Video Alert)
By: Laurie | April 25th, 2009UPDATE: This video is apparently NSFW, with the occasional random shot of a topless woman holding a grim reaper-type scythe. (Oh, what, you think I watch these things before I put them up?)
If you want to know exactly what times to close your eyes to keep from polluting your innocent mind, check out the comments. And now, back to our regularly scheduled post.
Two minutes.
That’s how long it took for little Ligue 2 side Vannes’ dreams of glory in the Coupe de la Ligue final to come crashing down. Bordeaux’s Wendel beat the offside trap, chipped the ball over hapless Vannes keeper Christophe Revel, and that was the end.
Actually, Vannes could only wish that had been the end. Two more goals would follow in the next ten minutes, with one more before halftime. (Bordeaux probably should have added a fifth, but a Vannes handball in the box right before the half wasn’t called.)
I was watching the game with French commentary, and I was glad I wasn’t playing a drinking game with various incarnations of the word “cauchemar” (nightmare), because I would be long-dead of alcohol poisoning.
Things settled down a bit in the second half as Bordeaux took their collective foot off the gas and focused on defending. Final score Bordeaux 4-0 Vannes.
I will admit, when I read this fantastic quote from Vannes manager Stephane la Mignan about playing in Stade de France I wanted them to do well there. From after the semis:
“I don’t think I realise [what’s happened] yet. This is our first ever year in the professional game, our first ever participation in the Coupe de la Ligue and yet we have won a ticket to the Stade de France! It’s huge. It’s a stadium where you are used to going to watch others, or the French team. On April 25, we will be there!”
But, sadly, we can’t always (or even often) get the fairytale ending we want. And this wasn’t quite the same team a lot of us fell in love with in its earlier outings against Auxerre and Nice. They seemed intimidated from the start and never quite found their stride. And maybe that’s unavoidable in a team who were amateurs till this season, in a situation where the Cup is delivered like this. (Sorry, it’s a screen shot from a bad stream. But yes, it’s exactly what it looks like: a woman, upside down, with the trophy attached to her person via caribiner. Pretty sure it’s considered “art.”)

But congratulations to Vannes for a job well done in making it this far. They seem set to stay up in Ligue 2 next season, so there’s always next year.
P.S. Speaking of screen shots, I have long been a defender of Bordeaux’s Yoann Gourcuff against accusations that he wears eye makeup. (Because there really are Frenchmen who are naturally colored this way.) But his eyes in his pregame interview made even me a doubter.
What do you think?

I have a 5 year old cousin who looks as he was wearing eyeliner all the time. The little kid doesn’t even know what eyeliner is, poor child.
Laurie Striptease isn’t wearing eyeliner, the problem is that we girls try so effing hard to have eyes like him for more than 4 hours without having to look in the mirror to see if the thing is our eyes. I’m so jealous of him cus I spend to much money on it. Damn you Yoann.Posted from

We worked for this! And we paid the price with Wendel.
Of course, this is only the second of many trophies this season.Posted from

Did you watch the video? There is a random naked woman in the middle of it…

Corey, are you serious? No, I only watched the first goal, because that was the one I had question on.
Too funny. Will watch now.
And Jennifer, Bordeaux absolutely earned and deserved this. But I wish Vannes had made them work a little harder for it!

Brief, I need to keep a list of these random tags somewhere so I know to go back to them.
On a related note, I’m quite happy that my “gratuitous nudity” tag has caught on so well!

Well done to Les Girondins but I do feel sorry for Vannes. Wel done to them too and come back stronger next year!
I’m with Corey on the video though – naked woman alert at 0:59, 2:09, 3:01, and 4:14.
And if Lashes Gourcuff wants to wear make up to live up to his nickname, I’m cool with that.

Corey, and Mallymoodle, with your information, I just happily realized that I can now go in and add the “gratuitous nudity” tag to this post.
