Brand Beckham: The Best Ever?

By: Daryl | December 28th, 2008

After 10 years of commercial wedded bliss, the money-spinning David Beckham & Pepsi marriage is finally over.

The man’s had basically a film career with all his fizzy drink ads, playing cowboys and surfers and gladiators. And sometimes even a footballer. Much cash has been pocketed and many cans of pop sold, but nothing ever lasts for ever.

The majority of newspapers have gone for the obvious headline, and a bit of speculation about whether Brand Beckham is on the decline.

And maybe it is, a little. Despite the extra buzz generated by the loan move to Milan, Beckham will probably never hit the peaks of his time at Man Utd and Madrid.

Becks has still got plenty of marketability left in him, as evidenced by all his other high profile contracts (like getting photogrpahed in his grundies for Armani). But his commercial activity will inevitably wind down over the next few years.

The big question is… when Beckham finally hangs up his footballing and advertising boots, who will replace him? I’d argue that though he’ll never be remembered as the world’s greatest footballer, we’ll one day look back on Beckham as the Pele, Maradona and George Best combined of advertising.

  • Aren't there great candidates for replacing Beckham? Messi, Ronaldo both come to top of mind as great players with panache and flair and marketability. And, let's not exactly count Becks out just yet...he's still playing soccer good ball...
  • Ronaldo is doing his job greatly... Good Luck..
  • Ronaldo is doing his job greatly.... Best of Luck...

Currently there isn't anyone at the height of Becks, marketable that is. The obvious name that comes to thought is CR, and he is today's most marketable player, but it will be difficult to reach Beckham's bench mark. Other players that could be in the category yet nothing close to him...Fernando Torres, CR, tevez...he he, i really don't see anyone that could replace him though.
  • Funny, I've been considering writing an "Is Gourcuff the next Beckham" post ever since he did le strip-tease at the Valenciennes game.
  • Gaston
ronaldhino had the potential back in his barcelona days to be the next highly marketable player. he had everything. the charisma, success on the field, awards, trophies, most paid, sweet endorsements, and he was known both in english and spanish speaking countries..... if only he didn't fuck it up

ronaldo and messi are believe might be the next
  • OhYes
I think Ronaldo is going to replace him. I already saw his face plastered all over foot locker.

Kevin Keegan was pretty much the ad-whore of the 1970s.

The obvious choice for replacing Brand Beckham is Ronaldo, but he's not anywhere near as likable as El Becks, and thus, it probably won't work out. If Ricky Kaká became a challenger for best player in the world again he could be. I dunno.

It depends really how the advertisers use the players - Cantona was a tricky sell when you think about it, but Nike turned him into an icon.
  • My personal guess, and maybe I'm stating the obvious: this isn't so much an ideological choice by Pepsi (as in "he's old, he's dated, we'll dissociate ourselves from Beckham from now on"), as a much as it is a clash on contract renewal. Becks probably wanted more than Pepsi were ready to fork up for a 32 year-old on the decline...

But amen to your last sentence Daryl. As I recall, there hasn't been (yet) a football (nay, could we even say a sports figure?) as heavily marketed as David Beckham.
