Brazilian Stadium to be Demolished
By: Martha | November 28th, 2007
It was announced yesterday that the Fonte Nova Stadium, the partial collapse of which cost seven people their lives last weekend, would be demolished, and a new complex built in its place.
According to Bahia governor Jacques Wagner, who order the stadium closed (duh) and initiated an investigation immediately after the collapse, the stadium will be imploded … at some point. No timetable has yet been shared with the public, but the obvious goal is to have the spanking new stadium (And mall! And parking lot!) ready to go in time for World Cup 2014.
Troublingly, it’s now coming out that in the architectural survey that labeled the stands at Fonte Nove “in ruins,” the stadium was rated as in the worst condition of the 29 possible World Cup venues examined during the survey. Jesus. The seven deaths made the collapse the worst disaster in Brazilian football history; whoever made the decision to hold a match there after such profession condemnation is very, very lucky it wasn’t worse.
