Bringing Back A Classic

By: chris | January 11th, 2008

If you were to ask me, this has to go down as one of the greatest advertising campaigns in recent sports history, based sheerly on the “coolness” factor. Of course, it begs the question, if you were to start up a 3 v 3 tournament, who ya got? I’ll take Totti, Messi and Gattuso. Francesco and Lionel are studs, but the latter just because I want to see caged Rino.

Oh, I LOVE this one. I almost downloaded this song on my iPod after seeing it. I still may.

    And “The Onetouchables”? Classic.

I’ll take C-Ron, Kaka and Drogba. Not a shred of defense, no, but they can make things happen in small spaces.

In about four years, though, I might take Adu, Altidore and Bradley.

This campaign has an anti-United bias. Still great though.

Also, Mendieta is in there? wtf?

How is there an anti-United bias? Just on the still in the video you have Ruud and Scholes, and United legend Cantona is running the whole dog and pony show.

The best part in the whole thing (apart from the Figo dancing) is Cantona waving Ruud off.

There’s a rematch as well. Tried to post the link but SK2 smacked me down. Search YouTube for Nike Secret Tournament Rematch

Soccer Dad, that’s worth wading into the depths of Spam Karma (and there is some seriously icky stuff in there) to pull out the post. Stay tuned — I’m off to rescue your comment. :-)

Thanks Laurie. Not sure why it flagged it. It got snagged in the second chance plugin (”This comment never got a second chance”) I honestly have never gotten that message and I use SK2 on all my sites.

I think our SK2 is alive. Some days it works beautifully and others it is cranky. Yesterday it ate fully half the comments on my Galaxy blog, and I had to go in and pull them out of the muck. It even eats my comments on occasion, randomly and for no apparent reason. I’m glad you’re not taking it personally.

I take it you have never seen Valencia play and think players careers begin and end with the EPL?

    Amazing ad otherwise.

I was just thinking all the United players that go out in the first round. Just thought it was funny is all.

And you can keep Mendieta then, since he’s so great. I’ll take any of the other guys in the ad thanks.

What’s really funny? How many times did I watch this before I recognized Cantona?
