Bruce Arena Sacked by New York

By: Bob | November 5th, 2007

bruce-arena.jpgIt is turning out to be Black Monday for MLS coaches. First Frank Yallop departed the Galaxy for a gig far, far away in San Jose and now Bruce Arena has been given his pink slip by Red Bull New York. Talk about someone falling from grace quickly. At one time there was scuttlebutt that Arena should be coaching in a top European league. Now, following a disappointing 2006 World Cup by the US national team and a first round playoff exit by New York this season, Da Bruce finds himself unemployed. Question of the day: If you are a manager looking for work, which coaching gig is more desirable? LA or New York? No, you can’t answer Colorado, although they might have a coaching vacancy too if things continue the way they are going today.

To me this seems like an indictment of his player evaluations. Although Angel was probably the best DP move of them all, characterizing his other moves as "questionable" may be putting it nicely. I think NY has a great foundation to make a run. It will be interesting to see who the Red Bull people bring in as a coach.
