Burnley Shock The World (And England, Too)
By: chris | August 20th, 2009It’s your first home game in the Premiership in 33 years. You were beaten by giants Stoke on the opening weekend. You’ve been granted a reprieve of…three-time defending champions Manchester United. Roll over and pray for morning sounds like a decent option, doesn’t it?
ManU lost four times in the league all of last year, to Liverpool (twice), Arsenal and Fulham (after Scholes’ red). To say this is a major upset is perhaps half the story, but the other half now resides in Madrid. And given that the entirety of the world’s press will speculate on this today at some point, we’ll leave it there.
That and it’s Burnley’s day.
Robbie Blake’s heart must have yo-yo-ed to the point of snapping yesterday, scoring that stunning volley while also committing the foul on Patrice Evra (nice that he made it such a no-brainer for the ref) which led to Michael Carrick’s saved penalty.
So Blake, keeper Brian Jensen and the rest of Burnley get a day they won’t forget for the rest of their lives, while Manchester United’s players get to go home and clean out the city of Manchester’s hair gel supply to find that magical potion.
Also worth noting that Sir Alex was gracious in defeat and yet could not help but to mention the state of the pitch. That silly Fergie….

“It was a terrific pitch so that’s no excuse. We just should have done better with it. We didn’t play well but that can happen. We usually take time to get going every season – sometimes it’s October before we get to our best form – but, yes, we shouldn’t be losing these games.”
I’m sure he said “people will say that… we usually take time to get going”

Thank god Man Utd were knocked off of their high horse. This just proves that without CR7, Man U = crap.

What’s with Man U and penalties this season?

@Seth,
the problem with your logic is that without CR7 I don’t hate them anymore. So I wouldn’t mind seeing them do okay this season.

Not that I should make a comparison, but Barcelona lost to Man City in a friendly and none of Barca’s fans really care… it’s because none of us will really know or be able to predict anything until October.
Doesn’t take anything away from Burnley though…damn good job.
