Canada 2-3 Brazil: One Backpass Too Many

By: Ian Rose | June 1st, 2008

Yesterday in Seattle, the Canadians took on mighty Brazil, always a challenge, even at (or near) home. Granted, it was without Kaka and a few of the biggest stars, but Luis Fabiano was there, and as you can see above, so was Robinho. He hopped on what is described aptly in the video … an awful ball … from Julian de Guzman, to score the eventual match winner. Canada had fought hard, and scored two very nice goals to twice equalize with the Brazilians, but mistakes like this one rarely go by without some consequences. In this case, it lost them a match they really deserved to draw.

This shouldn’t be the only thing remembered about such a great match, so after the bump, check out all the goals. That includes (sorry, Canada fans) another look at the passback, this time with Spanish commentators’ version of “awful ball”. Enjoy.

Good point, Sam. You were a bit closer than Brazil, but quite right, you were not at home.

Although the ball was bad, I still think that credit should be given to Robinho, he did very well to read the pass, catch up, beat the goalie and then finish.

Also think that the defender near Robinho could have dealt with it had he reacted quicker

I was at the game, and this was really tragic. DeGuzman had a wonderful game otherwise, but this is what he’ll be remembered for in Seattle.

On the whole, Canada impressed me a whole lot more than Brazil. They came to play, and their passing and ball control and creativity was far better than I expected, especially after they went behind 0-1 in the third minute. Brazil seemed to be phoning it in for three-quarters of the game.

I love Seattle. Who knew so many Brazil fans would come out of the woodwork and contribute to what was a fantastic atmosphere? I was impressed by Canada’s spirit - they fought hard through the whole match. All in all, a great experience.
