Capello is the Man (Almost)

The Guardian is reporting this morning that Fabio Capello’s appointment as England manager will be made official today, hopefully at a pimped-out press conference in which his glasses will glitter and he’ll speak no English.

The three hour meeting yesterday between Capello and the FA was described as “extremely positive,” and those who were there were reportedly “hugely impressed by Capello’s plans for the job and the freshness of his ideas for the first-team set-up.” (And by “fresh,” there’s a good chance they mean things like scouting.) For Capello’s part, he’s apparently agreed to the FA’s condition of having an English coach working alongside him, though the rest of his staff is expected to be made up of Italians would have spent their careers in Serie A.

Though Capello himself flew back to Italy last night, his People stayed in England to hammer out a contract which, if rumors are correct, will run through the 2010 World Cup and be worth £4 million. All that remains, then, is for the FA board to formally approve the Italian, and since several members have already spoken publicly of their support for him, that’s thought to be in the bag.

Oh, this is going to be fantastic: Capello will tell players they’re crap instead of calling them the best midfielders in the world no matter how they play, make the team hunker down and defend if that’s what it takes to win, and throw the fat, lazy ones out of the squad. It’s either going to be a miracle or a utter train wreck, and both will be a hell of a lot of fun to watch.
