Captain Fantastic Does It Again

By: chris | August 23rd, 2008

Much of the talk surrounding the Three Lions this week was focused on the positioning of Steven Gerrard (not unlike the discussion at Liverpool last year). Fabio Capello put him out on the left (supposedly), which was met by scores of criticism from people who know a lot less about football than Don Fabio.

So what is Gerrard’s best position? How about anywhere on the pitch. Today against Middlesbrough Stevie G did it once again, placing a 94th minute ball into the back of the net to take home a 2-1 victory. Forget positions, clutch is clutch.

My Arabic is rusty, but is the commentator calling Stevie G “God”? I just heard “Allah, Gerrard!”…

it could also be interpreted as OMG, or something of that extent. Barcelona have some highlights on youtube from an Arabic Commentator and you almost here the same thing when they score.

I guess you can say the Commentator is really really overwhelmed by the goal lol.

Gerrard always does well for Liverpool immediately after having yet another bloody shocker for England. Shame he can’t get as motivated for bloody England as he does for his club. Bastard.

Typical, lucky Scumpool.. especially after the FAT FACED one announced to the British Press that Gerrard was ‘tired.’ Oh dear what a shame…. perhaps some overhyped scouse footballer needs to do a 40 hour week or more like the rest of us and on less money too, bet he wont be ‘tired’ then!!!

Wow.. you can really tell no one watched the match. Gerrard was being called Captain Anonymous up until that point because he hadn’t done a thing the entire game. And I wouldn’t go so far as to call Liverpool lucky as we were given silly yellow cards, denied fouls, and then had the referee wave play on when a free kick could be given only to stop play once Kuyt was in a great spot for the advantage.

Not a great showing, but it’s progress and thankfully the progress came up with 3 points.

CSD - I don’t doubt it, but its typical for him to score near the end isn’t it? My post was tounge in cheek anyway.

Was just wondering. I don’t know much arabic besides some basic phrases and I heard that. I figured it meant something like “Oh My God” but thanks for the clarification! The goal was ordinary except for it’s timing though. A ball bouncing off of someone’s ass into the net in the 93rd minute to win will get celebrated like Maradona scored it (as it should).

P.S. Marco Pantanella - where have to been ? Arabic Commentators are the next best thing to Spanish ones In my Honest Opinion, so much emotion goes into the game, love it.

Why is it that Gerrard will get an undying amout of credit for this goal when it was one that most any mid could have scored? The media obsession with him is sickening.

fwembt - Any mid COULD have scored, but Gerrard does this more than another other mid in the world. He’s put together quite a nice collection of last-gasp winners in the past few seasons.

And it was a moment of brilliance from another lack-luster day for him. But isn’t that why he’s the captain? And probably also why he makes more in a week than I do in a year.
