Castrol Unleash Rankings Which Provide Ammo Against Rankings.

By: chris | October 29th, 2009

CORRECTION Spain Soccer Real Madrid Ronaldo

Nothing wrong with this picture whatsoever.

It’s a novel idea – compile a ranking which will help determine the world’s best player. Castrol did it for the Confederations Cup and now they’re unleashing for all of world football. Well, by “world football” they mean “Europe’s top 5 leagues” – Spain, England, Italy, Germany and France.

And really, it has the potential to be a fantastic idea which could put the Ballon d’Or bickering to rest. So who do you think won it? Messi or Ronaldo? Think again. First impressions are most important, and this first impression was a drunken face plant into the punch bowl.

You needn’t adjust your screen: that’s Thierry Henry up at the top. Now, Titi is a fine player, still world class, and one worthy of any side in the land. But his prime is somewhere back there and he’s not even the second best player on his own attacking line, much less in the world.

Still, Cristiano tells us it’s legit, therefore it must be:

“The Castrol Rankings is the ranking that every player wants to top. If you can be number one on the Castrol Rankings there can be no arguments, as it is based on fact, not opinion. That’s why I’m aiming for the number one spot to prove I’m the best!”

You’ll also notice not one, not two, but three Barcelona centerbacks on the list. Again, fine players the lot, but is Rafa Marquez really the 7th best player in the world? Nyet. Luca Toni also says hello from the Bayern reserves.

The full list is just as good, with Christian Abbiati and Roberto Soldado making cameos in the Top 20.

Now, this is a ranking with an affiliated acronym, and which affiliated acronym would you typically associate with slightly disreputable rankings? FIFA, of course. Proving once again, FIFA is rubbish and statistics can be manipulated to say anything.

Xavi in 26th is nothing. I went looking for Zlatan. And I looked, and looked and looked and loo…oh, here he is.

    52nd.

To be fair, you could’ve put Victor Hugo in his place most games and it not have mattered the slightest.

Despite the absurdity of these rankings, one good thing has come out of them. Look at the anguish on Ronaldo’s face, actually having a photo taken where he’s not made out to be the best player in the world, not even the second, but the third. the fact that he’s actually having to stand and pose as the 3rd best player must have felt like a kick in the nuts for his ego

But you see…all of you are basing this on opinion! Castrol uses facts! by creating a merit system based on expert input they have created a system which says Wayne Rooney who had numerous shots, assists and even plays defense for his squads (club and country) is not in the top 30!

    lol, what a crock.

These idiots reason an intercepting tackle closer the the goal is moar points!!11!!eleven!!! Hmm then I guess Barca should stop trying to win the ball in the attacking 3rd! Tactics be damned, winning the ball from a striker in front of the box…when the box is crowded is FAR more valuable to nicking the ball off the defender and going straight for goal.

Did I mention that a winning goal is no more valuable than a normal goal? Really? Cricket has a wonderful ranking system because the game is simplified to 1 bowler at 1 batsman. All batsmen have the game goal, score runs, all bowlers have the same goals, don’t concede runs and take wickets.

In football the goal is wildly tactical and taking the ball off Player X in front of your goal may be seem better than taking it off player Y in the midfield….what if player X is John Terry and Player Y is Xavi.

How can they think their ranking system is unbiased when there’s 3 midfielders in the top 20? and 11 forwards!!!

The thing is I’ve bought oil for my car twice, when it was leaking and I needed to refill til I could get to my mechanic and when I moved away for a few months and came back to find the level a little low before, so I bought some til it went to get serviced.

Other than that every oil change is done by my mechanic and he chooses whatever his experience tells him works best. I think I got Shell Havoline oil last service…but I’m not sure and having a football ranking really isn’t going to make me care.
