Celtic Win the SPL, Rangers’ Quadruple Reduced to Ruins
By: Daryl | May 23rd, 2008
Dramatic finale in Scotland last night. Celtic and Rangers went into the final game of the season level on 86 points at the top, though Celtic had a slightly superior goal difference.
But Rangers – possibly exhausted after playing ten billion (approx.) games in the last two weeks – lost 2-0 at an up for it Aberdeen, and Celtic won 1-0 at Dundee United. Congratulations to Celtic, but commiserations to Rangers, whose much hyped potential quadruple currently stands at a grand total of one Scottish League Cup.
Rangers have a chance to make that a double this Saturday when they play Queen of the South in the Scottish Cup Final. A trophy worth winning and no mistake. But the big two prizes in that quadruple were the UEFA Cup (which they lost to Zenit last week) and the SPL title.
Rangers fans can definitely argue that the UEFA Cup adventure is to blame for losing the SPL title. Between the actual UEFA Cup Final itself and the backlog of games that had to be played this month, Rangers have pretty much played a game every three days throughout May. In that spell, draws with Hibernian and Motherwell and last night’s defeat have cost the team a title that was in their own hands. If I was a Rangers fan I’d be more than a little unhappy with the SPL refusing to extend the season a little.
But there is one upside to all this.
Neutrals are always complaining that the Scottish premier League is too unbalanced, that the Glasgow giants win too easily. But seems a solution has been found this season. All you have to do is make the Old Firm play once every three days and the results soon start to even out.
