Celtic’s Hiring Standards Do Not Include The Common Man

By: chris | June 5th, 2009

Genius find from Matt over at the Celtic Offside.

The Hoops are currently looking for a manager. The search hasn’t gone spectacularly well – particularly if you ask Tony Adams – so a certain Celtic fan and online forum member decided to toss his hat into the ring. He whipped up a letter teeming with genius and sent it off to Celtic. And guess what? They replied. Who says football clubs don’t care about the common man anymore?

The letter is brilliant and you can read it in its entirety here, but for now a few selected snippets worth mentioning:

My love of the beautiful game started around 7 years old when I was selected to be striker for St Fillians primary school “B” team, a position I held until leaving said school 4 years later. I never went for trials in Secondary School. I have maintained my low level of fitness with the odd game of ‘fives’ since then.

Only last week as I was in my bedroom donning my suit to play the Scottish Cup Final I was dreaming of how it would be to lead the real team out on the Hampden surface. I can assure you when this is the case I will not only be wearing my suit but I will probably put a flower in the button hole.

I am also fully aware of the financial constraints clubs are under these days and Celtic in particulars insistence on balancing the books. I have therefore included a first class stamp with this letter so that you can forward my interview date at no cost to yourselves.

And somewhat worryingly, Celtic replied as though they currently don’t have enough worthy applicants to weed through. (Tony Adams says he’s still available.) But fortunately for Celtic fans, they do still have reasonable standards and will not be plucking a man off the streets to lead them back to somewhere which isn’t second place – and they were very polite about it despite merciless interoffice memos

Once again, both letters over here.
