Champions League Knockouts Round 1 Part Deux
By: chris | March 5th, 2008
A brief look at today’s CL action.
Chelsea (0) v Olympiakos (0): Maybe Avram Grant will throw out a watered down lineup with a bunch of youth team players because this one’s in the bag. Or not. After resting the big guns in anticipation of the Carling Cup final in the first leg, Avram went 0-for-2 with a goalless stalemate in Greece and an extra time loss to the Spurs. With Jose’s well-documented “failures” in Europe being the straw that broke the Russian’s back, it’s no secret that Avram needs to perform and perform damn well on the continent to have any semblance of job security. They should win, but they also should’ve won the first game as well…….
Real Madrid (1) v Roma (2): You need look no further to find the tie of the round. Two sides who can bag goals like it’s going out of style and the home team can’t really afford to play conservatively going in after losing the first leg. The score could be 3-0 at halftime either way and the game wouldn’t be over. Could be one of the greats.
Porto (0) v Schalke (1): I couldn’t for the life of me think of the 6th team playing today last night, after cycling through the first two games and Porto. Who would’ve thunk a German team would be so inconspicuous to someone who spends so much time cycling the footballing internet? The hopes of both Germany and Portugal ride on this game, and if Germany goes out, it will be nothing but a great disappointment for the entire league. Schalke has a lot more to play for than just their own aspirations here.
Rob’s big preview here.
