Champions League Round of 16 Leg Two Tuesday Deadblog.
By: chris | March 10th, 2009
Due to server issues which you may have already encountered (we’ve decided the internet is dying), we will be eschewing a liveblog in favor of a deadblog – or an open thread for those of you not quite as morbid as Daryl – for comments. Periodic updates when available, but I just got a brand spankin’ new box of cereal with a toy at the bottom and, well, you can see where my afternoon is going.
So we’ll drop this deadblog off and you can feel free to comment away – along with your requisite goal predicitions.
Finals
Liverpool 4 (5) v Real Madrid 0 (0)
Bayern 7 (12) v Sporting 1 (1)
Juventus 2 (2) v Chelsea 2 (3)
Panathinaikos 1 (2) v Villarreal 2 (3)
So going through it’s…Liverpool, Villarreal, Chelsea & Bayern.
And I think I speak for most when I say: I hope to all that is good in this world that Bayern is absolutely trounced in the next round.
Updates:
92′ I now have no respect whatsoever for Bayern: 7-1.
90′ Cruelty in Liverpool as well: Liverpool 4 – Real 0. And really, if you let Andrea Dossena score on you, an exit is the least you deserve.
84′ All over in Torino: Juventus 2 – Chelsea 2
82′ Who knew it could be worse than the first leg? 6-1 in Bavaria.
75′ And it’s all over for Cinderella: Villarreal 2 – Panathinaikos 1.
And 5-1 Bayern, for good measure.
70′ Chiellini sent off for Juventus – no Cech, though, who handled the ball outside the area to keep it from Alessandro Del Piero – and with Juve needing two goals, that one might as well be clocked out.
And as I type that, Juve get a penalty and, after Olof Mellberg and John Terry start a skirmish, ADP slots it home. 2-1 Juventus and they may have a spot of life in them yet.
55′ And not too long after Mantzios equalizes for Panathinaikos, so all is square – including away goals – in Athens 1-1.
50′ Villarreal have swung matters massively in their favor by going one up while equaling out the away goal of Panathinaikos. 1-0 Villarreal.
Second half has begun and Real Madrid are going home once again. 3-0 and Stevie G with his second.
At half time, the updated second leg and aggregate scores.
Liverpool 2 (3) v Real Madrid 0 (0)
Bayern 4 (9) v Sporting 1 (1)
Juventus 1 (1) v Chelsea 1 (2)
Panathinaikos 0 (1*) v Villarreal 0 (1)
* – Away goals.
45′ 4-1 in Bavaria. Well at least they got one.
Chelsea have made Juve’s task a massive uphill battle with that priceless away goal. 1-1 in Northern Italy.
40. Bayern 3-0. Oy.
35′ Bayern 2-0. Send Sporting your prayers.
30′ Handball called on Heinze in the box and Stevie G slots it home to ask Real for 3 goals to come back. Not looking good, is it?
15′ Liverpool got off to such a flying start Real are lucky to still be in the competition, still 0-0 though.
Nevermind, 1-0 – Fernando Torres with the goal and incredibly fortunate not to get called for a foul in the box. Real can feel mighty aggrieved.
Bayern have compounded Sporting’s misery 1-0.
And Vincenzo Iaquinta makes it 1-0 in Torino, evening up the tie.
Liverpool (1) v Real Madrid (0)
Bayern (5) v Sporting (0)
Juventus (0) v Chelsea (1)
Panathinaikos (1) v Villarreal (1)

Goal Predictions:
You know the drill. And if you don’t, here are the instructions from the first leg…
We’re going to stick with tradition and ask for your total number of goals scored today predictions.
And because it’s a bit tighter than when we had eight simultaneous games, we’ll have a random tie-breaker too. Which letter of the alphabet will feature most in goalscorers names? For example, if Ibrahimovic scores, then that’s three “I”s.
Some rules I just made up: you can copy someone’s prediction for number of goals, and you can copy someone’s prediction for most goalscoring letter of the alphabet. But you can’t copy both, otherwise your answer is identical and we have problems. Sound fair?
rules update: The letter count includes surname (basically the name on the back of the shirt, or more specifically, the names on the UEFA Matchcentre teamsheets) only. Just so there’s no confusion.
Second leg….8 goals brought to you by the letter “I”.

It take a special kind of sadism to defeat a team 12-1 on aggregate and a special kind of idiocy to pour all your energy and manpower to go through in the champions league when you’ve got a make-it-or-brake it match this saturday against the reigning European champions.

Um… Bayern were just trying to give their sold out home crowd a nice show. Or something. Eep! Don’t hate on the debutant Muller for trying to prove he’s worth keeping around. Would have been nice if they’d let Butt take that penalty, though.

What did Bayern do wrong? Actually play football? Props to them. Is it humiliating? Yes, but it’s called the Champions’ League, not the Mercy League. They played like Champions over these two legs. At least they gave us something spectacular to watch

I wasn’t just responding to you Musab. A couple of people have said that the scoreline was in some way cruel or demoralizing. I just don’t see it that way. Those are the games that go down in history.
