Chile vs. Italy – Battle of Santiago

By: Bob | February 15th, 2007

Don’t you always love it when commentators wax poetically about how beautiful the game of football used to be while they deride the modern game? They might have a point sometimes, but when you watch the above clip from years gone by you can see that even when the game was played in black and white it had its moments of gory blood red. The video comes from the infamous Battle of Santiago match between Chile and Italy in the 1962 World Cup. It starts out ugly and only gets worse from there. The highlight of the highlights to me is listening to the hyperbolic descriptions of the commentator. They would fit in perfectly if he was calling matches today.

Awesome. The flying kick was the best.
  • Wow that's quite bad

2)There's discussion of this game in John Foot's brilliant Calcio, I seem to recall there was (as usual) a lot of speculation about the referee being corrupt.

The introducer reminds me of the scientist in Willy Wonka (the original), "I am now telling the computer EXACTLY what he can do with a lifetime supply of chocolate!!!"
