Cinderella Tears Her ACL
By: chris | January 15th, 2009
Anyone a fan of underdogs has surely loved Hoffenheim’s run as pacesetters for the Bundesliga this term. From small village team to cream of the German footballing crop, Cinderella stories get no bigger. And if we were to label one player as Cinderella herself, it’s hardly a contest: Vedad Ibisevic, the Bosnian striker leaving the rest of Germany’s hitmen in the dust atop the scoring chart.
But now, through a cruel blow of fate, Cinderella has torn her ACL in a winter break friendly, season likely over.
In a statement on their website the surprise pace-setters said Ibisevic was checked by doctors in Germany and that he had torn his ligament and could now be sidelined for several months.
The time frame is still up for debate, but at the very least he’s going to miss most of the second half of the season – and chances are his season is over unless it’s a very mild tear. ACL tears aren’t one of those injuries where you miraculously wake up in two months and feel like a million rubles.
And Hoffenheim are clearly at least putting the sans-Ibisevic era wheels into motion:
“If Vedad is not at our disposal for the second round of the season then we would need to become active on the transfer market,” coach Ralf Rangnick said.
A massive blow for Hoffenheim, a massive blow for German football, but also a massive blow for football in general. Winning the topflight the year after promotion is nothing short of spectacular and for a village team to do so would be nothing short of a modern day fairy tale.

That sucks. Really, really sucks.

Although that is what has suspected, the web-site you mentioned must have problems with translation because results have not been confirmed yet by the club. That might change as there is a lot of speculation on all the typical sites. I am making a post now to update.
