Clericus Cup: Another Goal Celebration for FIFA to Ban
By: Bob | February 26th, 2007
That is Mater Ecclesiae coach Marco Antonio Rosales on his knees and offering thanks after his team scored in the opening match of the Vatican’s Clericus Cup on Saturday. The tournament features teams from Rome’s many seminaries battling it out with players from more than 50 nations taking part to win the world’s strangest trophy.
Mater Ecclesiae sent an early message to the rest of the competition that they might not only have a higher power on their side, but they also might have a bit of talent.
Amid screams from the coaches, pious slogans from the small crowd and T-shirts invoking the protection of the Virgin Mary, a motley crew of Latin Americans, Africans and Asians from the Collegio Mater Ecclesiae (Mother of the Church College) took on an all-Brazilian team fielded by the Gregorian University.
In a miraculous upset, the young Mater Ecclesiae players trounced the more experienced but portly Brazilians 6-0 as their fans chanted: “The Mother of the Church wants a goal!”
The game had its share of hard tackles and rough play, with the first goal coming from a penalty kick - the second in the match.
The tournament lasts until June and I will be fully disappointed if there isn’t at least one brawl between now and then. Highlights of the opening match and interviews with the players presumably professing their love of Diego Maradona God can be found on below. Gregorian University could probably benefit from having a keeper who isn’t too busy working the rosary to stop easy shots on goal.

Wow that is the worst performance by a keeper I have ever seen.
