Club World Cup Final Set
By: Martha | December 13th, 2007
It took more than an hour, but Milan eventually took advantage of their domination of Urawa Reds in Yokohama this morning, going ahead through Clarence Seedorf in the 68th minute and making the goal stand up to move into Sunday’s final against Boca Juniors.
After a frantic opening 10 minutes, the match settled down and it was all Milan. They dominated possession, and almost immediately won the ball back every time they gave it away. Milan did, however, have their usual problem with turning possession into goals and, despite what seemed like endless chances, apart from one Andrea Pirlo free kick, they rarely troubled Ryota Tsuzuki in the Urawa goal until late in the match. Instead, the shots went wide or over, with Seedorf in particular squandering at least three fantastic looks.
Urawa defended valiantly and tried to counter when they could, finally putting together some good attacking football in the last 10 minutes, earning several corners and forcing a handful of saves out of Nelson Dida in the Milan goal. Washington had the best chance for the Japanese side, but his curling shot from the edge of the box was well-saved by Dida.
The Red Diamonds will face Etoile in Sunday’s third-place match, while Milan prepare to face Boca, hoping to avenge their loss to the Argentine side in the finals of the 2003 Intercontinental Cup.
