Club World Rankings

By: Bob | October 3rd, 2006

sevilla-uefa.jpgWith a fancy sounding name like The International Federation of Football History & Statistics, you can’t help but respect their authority in such matters as ranking the best club teams in the world. The IFFHS has released the current rankings of the top 346 teams in the world based on its almost understandable formula.

The top club? None other than UEFA Cup holders Sevilla, followed closely by fellow La Liga studs Barcelona and Serie A pretenders AC Milan. At the other end of the spectrum is some guy named Marshal Mubarek, who plays in Uzbekistan, and comes in as the 346th ranked team.

As with any type of ranking system, one always has to take it with a grain of salt, especially if you are a fan of Major League Soccer and happen to see that only one team, the 287th ranked LA Galaxy, made the list.

Club World rankings for October 2006 are below.

1. Sevilla 287 pts .
2. Barcelona 281.
3. AC Milán (Italy) 271.
4. Liverpool (England) 269.
5. Arsenal (Eng) 262.+.Marsella(France) 262.
7. R.Bucarest (Rumanía) 250.
8. Roma (Italy) 245.

It would be hard to argue that Sevilla is better than Barcelona considering the outcome in Spain last year.

After reading the IFFHS ranking system, it seems fatally flawed. In ranking teams they forget that not all “continental cups” are of equal value. The UEFA Cup is worth the same number of points as the Champions League and since there are far more games in the UEFA Cup than the CL, Sevilla had the ability to dominate that continental cup and thus earn themselves more points because the competition, albeit weaker than La Liga and the CL, has more games that are worth more. (14 points for a win in the Cup or the CL, while only 4 in La Liga; a draw in Cup is worth to the IFFHS than a win in La Liga — 7pts to 4pts)

That is why the rankings are so off.

(Note that Palermo is in 17th, while Real Madrid is in 24th…makes sense…)

(Also note that #287 is the first American team, the LA Galaxy, down 3 spots from the previous rankings.)

it is rediculous that middlesborough is ranked higher than manchester united….even more rediculous is the fact that ManU is ranked 41st WHEN IT LEADS THE ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE. These rankings are terrible. absolute crap.
