CR7: Is There Anyone You Love To Hate More?
By: chris | May 7th, 2009Raise your hand if you needed to click on this post for the subject of derision. Didn’t think so.
Cristiano Ronaldo might be football’s ultimate Marmite test, the quintessential love him or hate him player – with seemingly far more in the latter category. And after his two goals yesterday, both the work of a gifted athlete, he only further enraged with celebrations led by a look on his face which screamed “I am hot. I am hot. I am hot.” (he picked it up from Nani). The arrogance was astounding, something which was picked up by many in the liveblog, and completely devoid of any professionalism whatsoever – not that he’s ever been accused of having any in the first place. The video doesn’t do justice but I suspect most caught the sleazy protrusion of lips and squinting holier-than-thou expression plastered across his face.
So is he the player fans love to hate the most? Or is it Zlatan, one of the (very) select few in CR’s pantheon of arrogance? Or maybe Robinho’s teary-eyed dash for the cash to Citeh? Or…or…there aren’t too many who ascend to this level of distaste that I can think of – so maybe you can fill in the blanks.

Oh, I can understand the hatred for sure. Even United fans hate him at times. I have found myself shouting at my TV in frustration at him many times.
I just don’t think he’s the only player like this…

No, that’s true. No doubt he gets more exposure simply because he plays for Utd, and the hypocrisy is sickening. That hypocrisy is the main reason why Utd fans stick by him as you no doubt know; but, as much as I hate that, and on this occasion only, I think he brings it on himself more than people love to hate Utd.

The brilliant thing is, from a United perspective, is that this hatred from people like chris is Ronaldo’s fuel. It’s what drives him.
So please, do continue slagging him off… give him some tunnel songs too if you like.

simon’s right. Ronaldo loves it. Remember how he reacted to the vilification of him by fans and media alike after the 2006 World Cup? He prospers under hatred. Much like Drogba, but with more consistency.

Also, chris, can we have a slag-off post about the Chelsea-Barca game? All this unbridled nervous hatred is a missed opportunity for catharsis: it’s what football as a mirror of the human psyche is all about.
(Of course, I just want to be in there so I can do a bit of shit-stirring, but still…)

I due hate Pug Face Rooney more. While this may be the best possible match up in the final, Yankees v. Yankees in my mind.

I find his cocky celebrations and arrogant comments to be funny. And no, I don’t like Man U or Cristiano

glad chris gets to make another DONT U HATE RONALDO? post…talk about a retread.
dani alves, the object of many of your fappings no doubt, was every single bit the petulant little shit ronaldo is if not worse over the two legs with chelsea.
micheal ballack acted the complete fool last night like he ALWAYS DOES. drogba was not too far behind.
and just for kicks…diving frankie totti with his stupid pleas and looks to the gods like they’re going to help him get over being old and slow now…the queen of melodrama and flopping and flailing and being discussed as a great cause he drug a crap team from mid bottom to mid top of a table. bra-fuckin-vo.

The only athlete in the world who could be considered more loathsome is American baseball player Alex Rodriguez – A-Rod. He and Cristiano are not two peas in a pod, they’re half of the same pea. The only thing CR7 has going for him is that he hasn’t been implicated in any performance enhancing drug scandals (only sleazy sex ones). Heck, they even kind of look alike.

you have to throw ballack and drogba in this discussion after yesterday…
i personally hate messi…not for anything he does, but because i just don’t think he is nearly as good as all the hullabaloo on here would have you believe…
and as far as arrogant, petulent little twats go, mario balotelli of Inter is quickly on the rise as the biggest asshole in the game.

i hate CR7, but in the interest of full disclosure, Inzaghi’s celebrations are even worse and i love super Pippo, so…

I´ve always disliked CR7 a lot, but he´s earned a good amount of respect from me this season. Seems he´s overcome his choking habit.

CR’s attitude is not a good example for children, who admire the sport heroes and imitate them. I cannot admire him for this reason, despite of his skills. Hope he losses the final and learns a bit of humility. Messi instead… ok stop here this is out-of-scope

^^^^ Spare me with the “what about the kids?” nonsense… kids will always admire the best players for how they play on the field… their off the field stuff doesn’t matter to them…
and the ronaldo celebration, who gives a shit? if you dont want him to celebrate dont let him score… He is one of those players who thrives off hate and it fuels him even that much more… i can only imagine the verbal abuse he receives, where he is public enemy #1 during every match… I hate Man United but i recognize ronaldo’s talent… best player in the world and he made my team, arsenal look ridiculous…

If Chelsea played Barcelona the way Arsenal played Man Utd. Messi would have had 3 goals and a few assists. He was triple-quadruple teamed every time he had the ball. Ronaldo is very fast and has 2 very good feet but lacks vision and understanding of the game. Watch him in the Premier League when a side is content to counterattack on Man Utd. He is rendered useless b/c he will try to dribble 4 guys and lose the ball every time. At least Messi, Arshavin etc. has the vision and football IQ to thread a pass or at the very least keep possession for his team.
These are the reasons why I don’t like him. Hell of an athlete, is ultimately too selfish and naive to fulfill his massive potential.

No matter how CRon celebrates, it will always be interpreted negatively by some. So I guess it’s easier for him to not give a damn about it.

He has no one to blame for himself. Comparing him and Pippo is interesting. The difference is that whereas Pippo is short and slow and thus scores his goals out of just being talented, sneaky, and having tons of guile, CR7 is arguably along with Ibra the most athletically/physically gifted forward (don’t give me that winger crap) in the world. Thus, Pippo gets a little cred as the unathletic guy that could. That and he comes across as funny. A caricature even. CR7 instead comes across as an arrogant prick.
Part of it is subconscious envy of the guy’s natural gifts (body, genes, talent, etc…) but part of it is that the guy truly does nothing to endear himself to the world besides being good at football. Most popular players could be seen as an inspirational figure who overcame obstacles and limitations, who aren’t perfect, who are humble, who give the fans something to identify with. CR7 originally was a poor kid from Madeiras. The fact is 98% of people can’t identify with him or find something in him to inspire them. Messi was the poor, small kid with the hormone disorder who overcame his disability and still retains his boyish charm, never goes out the clubs, and just plays. Raul and del Piero are players whose loyalty stands out, standing by their club in thick and thin. Gerrard is the local boy playing for his hometown team and remaining loyal all the way. Ronaldinho was the poor kid with a joy for life and happiness alla round (at least he WAS).
CR7 didn’t have to overcome physical problems like Messi, after his Real Madrid saga is not perceived as loyal, acts angry instead of happy, and is a serial womanizer/party animal during the off season who is not afraid to flaunt his wealth and celebrity. That’s why so many people hate him. It doesn’t change the fact he is a great player. He’s just a hateable and apparently shitty human being who’s better than you and that pisses you off.

The difference between CR7 and Drogba:
CR7 is good, knows he’s good, preens and dives like a prima donna and then makes plays of such brilliance that you can’t help but admire his skill.
Drogba is good, knows he’s good, preens and dives like a prima donna and FORGOT HOW TO DO ANYTHING ELSE.

I think Ronaldo in terms of current footballers takes the cake but compared to guys like Maradona, Zidane and Cantona hes a flyweight.
Arguably Cantona was the real bad boy of football. Personally Cantona was one of my favourite characters of all time.
Nowadays every celebrity is surrounded by dozens of public relations managers telling them what to do and say to be acceptable and you end up getting sports personalities acting like they have no character and are advertising drones.
It’s nice to see a footballer with some character not saying whatever is required of him by a politically correct society.

Most arrogant:
1. Christie ron-ron
2. Ibrahimobitch
3. Balotelli
4. RooneyMessi is the best attacking player ever, and is humble and only dives in pools to boot.
PS. superpippo is a beast, lol.

I’ll play the newb here. I haven’t watched much of Zlatan outside of his highlight reels. Is he really super-cocky like CR? In my limited experience he just came off as more insanely intense (like the video of him staring down Brazil Ronaldo like he was going to ride him a dog in the park).

Yes, he’s terrible. Him and balotelli make a great team that rivals ronaldo and rooney.

I can understand the Ronaldo hate but why the Rooney hate? He’s one of the most hard working guys in the league, he doesn’t generally strop and he certainly doesn’t dive nor have I seen that much arrogance from him.Admittedly he has a temper but so do lots of players and unless you’re an Everton fan I don’t see any reason to really dislike him.
Personally I find Anelka to be objectionable and always have. He’s possibly the most mercenary of all the players in the Premier League these days which is saying something and he barely puts in any effort anyway.
