I can understand the Ronaldo hate but why the Rooney hate? He’s one of the most hard working guys in the league, he doesn’t generally strop and he certainly doesn’t dive nor have I seen that much arrogance from him.Admittedly he has a temper but so do lots of players and unless you’re an Everton fan I don’t see any reason to really dislike him.

Personally I find Anelka to be objectionable and always have. He’s possibly the most mercenary of all the players in the Premier League these days which is saying something and he barely puts in any effort anyway.

I’ll play the newb here. I haven’t watched much of Zlatan outside of his highlight reels. Is he really super-cocky like CR? In my limited experience he just came off as more insanely intense (like the video of him staring down Brazil Ronaldo like he was going to ride him a dog in the park).

I think Ronaldo in terms of current footballers takes the cake but compared to guys like Maradona, Zidane and Cantona hes a flyweight.

Arguably Cantona was the real bad boy of football. Personally Cantona was one of my favourite characters of all time.

Nowadays every celebrity is surrounded by dozens of public relations managers telling them what to do and say to be acceptable and you end up getting sports personalities acting like they have no character and are advertising drones.

It’s nice to see a footballer with some character not saying whatever is required of him by a politically correct society.

He has no one to blame for himself. Comparing him and Pippo is interesting. The difference is that whereas Pippo is short and slow and thus scores his goals out of just being talented, sneaky, and having tons of guile, CR7 is arguably along with Ibra the most athletically/physically gifted forward (don’t give me that winger crap) in the world. Thus, Pippo gets a little cred as the unathletic guy that could. That and he comes across as funny. A caricature even. CR7 instead comes across as an arrogant prick.

Part of it is subconscious envy of the guy’s natural gifts (body, genes, talent, etc…) but part of it is that the guy truly does nothing to endear himself to the world besides being good at football. Most popular players could be seen as an inspirational figure who overcame obstacles and limitations, who aren’t perfect, who are humble, who give the fans something to identify with. CR7 originally was a poor kid from Madeiras. The fact is 98% of people can’t identify with him or find something in him to inspire them. Messi was the poor, small kid with the hormone disorder who overcame his disability and still retains his boyish charm, never goes out the clubs, and just plays. Raul and del Piero are players whose loyalty stands out, standing by their club in thick and thin. Gerrard is the local boy playing for his hometown team and remaining loyal all the way. Ronaldinho was the poor kid with a joy for life and happiness alla round (at least he WAS).

CR7 didn’t have to overcome physical problems like Messi, after his Real Madrid saga is not perceived as loyal, acts angry instead of happy, and is a serial womanizer/party animal during the off season who is not afraid to flaunt his wealth and celebrity. That’s why so many people hate him. It doesn’t change the fact he is a great player. He’s just a hateable and apparently shitty human being who’s better than you and that pisses you off.

No matter how CRon celebrates, it will always be interpreted negatively by some. So I guess it’s easier for him to not give a damn about it.
