Cristiano Ronaldo Sees Red for a WTF Moment
By: Laurie | November 30th, 2008
I’ve watched this video about five times, trying to get inside the mind of Cristiano Ronaldo to figure out WTF he was thinking when he two-handed the ball right in front of the goal.
The only guess I can come up with? “Not the face!”
I also found the reactions from Benjani (opponent) and Ferdinand (teammate) kind of interesting. Does anybody want to fill us in on the history between Benjani and Ronaldo?

i guess Benjani was trying to show comfort to C. Ronaldo…as well as trying to get him off the pitch as well mannered as possible.

I think the Benjani comforting probably stems from the two being friends(probably from being footballers in the same city). Rio’s high five is…i dunno. But wayyyyy more entertaining is Berbatov’s pirouette spinny thing that he does at about 0:13. it’s hilarious.

I think Ronaldo claimed he heard a whistle, which I guess is plausible, but still why not catch the ball then, that slap was the frailest thing I’ve ever seen.

these mental lapses happen to every player. it’s unexplainable to themselves when they occur, even though the video evidence suggests otherwise.

I did the same thing yesterday playing with my friends. My friend had crossed the ball for me to head it and while jumping up to head it I hesitated and the ball was coming a bit fast so I just stopped it from hitting my face (or smack in the nose). IF he heard a whistle first he should get hearing test and b he should of just ducked.

Uwvie, you mean there are people who don’t pirouette when they’re frustrated?
I had no idea.

Ridiculous decision from the ref: it was a clear handball, but there was never an intention to score from it. Maybe he heard a whistle or not, but just from his body language you can tell he wasn’t trying to score. Besides, nobody’s stupid enough to (and if ever there was a challenge to this claim, it would be from CR; but nevertheless) try to score with a two arm block when they could just as easily header it. The referees (and the FA) need to sort this out, because it’s just not good enough.

Honestly, I really do think he was trying to protect his face.
Not joking in the slightest bit. I think that’s what he did. Funny that he got sent off though!Posted from

Why doesn’t he just go ahead with his header? Whistle or not…
Whatever. Berba’s piroutte and Rooney storming off (I assume to the bench to get instructions) are comedy. Haha.

“OH my beautiful face!”
Yeah, he’d do something like that while thinking those words…

“NOT THE FACE”

I think he was trying to protect his face and just had a brain fart.
I did a similar thing a few years back, simply caught the ball out of the air for no reason. Got a yellow two minutes into the game, played like the crap the last 88Posted from

Sensed a push in the back. Realized his header wasn’t going to connect as he planned. Raised arms to protect face.
Not much more to say I think.

Trying to protect his face – oh please! Like Cristiano Ronaldo has never had balls in his face!

Thanks, Johonna. I am having a rotten day, yet you have made me laugh.

It cuts it off in this video, but I believe the Rio “high-five” was actually him slapping away Slave’s hand in frustration. If you watched the match, he then pretty clearly tells #7 to shut up… so, I think Rio was actually performing as a captain should…

This is one of the few times that I’ve seen Cristiano off his game. His timing was off and he was obviously protecting his face. It was a mistake that I don’t think we’ll see happen ever again.
